Even the females are kings!

Female Kings have green heads and red bodies.

Males are the only Australian parrot with a completely red head.

Although king parrots appear red and green to us,

birds have an extra cone in their eyes that enable them to see ultraviolet wavelengths.

Under ultraviolet light, some of the King Parrots wing feathers glow with golden light, like a crown.

King Parrots mate for life and often are seen in pairs like these two.

Cheers to you from the beautiful Aussie kings~
What a lovely color!

Beautiful! It’s good to see that nature has graced the female of the species with colored plumage.

In parrots, definitely yes, the females have more muted color, but still they are completely stunning creatures.

Oh, how lovely. Birds mating for life is so sweet.
Shame we can’t see the ultraviolet spectrum.

Both things are true, and so many bird species do, mate for life. Maybe life is much more colorful for them 🦜

Their feathers already vibrant, adding another spectrum light would be something even more amazing I would imagine. Bird males seem to have more colorful than female ones.

Yes, the reasons why this is true are really pretty complicated and fascinating to me. If you are interested check out: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-are-male-birds-more-c/

Conspicuous in their flamboyance, they make a very striking couple Cindy. Such panache! 😀
For some quirky reason I’m reminded of ‘his’ and ‘hers’ towels in a newly-wed’s first home 😀
Have a wonderful week,
Take care 🙏

Well, they are a color coordinated, matching set….. Mother Nature was feeling especially artistic with the parrot species. They look just like something designed by the world’s most talented designer. Be well my friend 🦜

These are the sweetest looking birds–but I know they’re likely also very chattery!

They are actually quiet parrots, compared to other parrots and certainly compared to cockatoos who like to shriek. They are shy, quiet, sweet parrots. 🦜

These parrots are so gorgeous! When I was in Kauai recently, I was reacquainted with the thousands of green-coated parakeets who live in the South end of the island. They roost at night in palm trees near resorts and make a heck of a noise as they “return to the roost.’

Beautiful. I wonder if that extra cone makes the male parrot look as if he has a halo!
Last year I saw an Indigo Bunting for the first time. They only fly through our area.
Though our nights are still chilly spring is on the way! And with Daylight Savings we have more daylight! Cheers, Jules
