Even the females are kings!
Female Kings have green heads and red bodies.
Males are the only Australian parrot with a completely red head.
Although king parrots appear red and green to us,
birds have an extra cone in their eyes that enable them to see ultraviolet wavelengths.
Under ultraviolet light, some of the King Parrots wing feathers glow with golden light, like a crown.
King Parrots mate for life and often are seen in pairs like these two.

They are a beautiful bird Cindy, I’ve had many come from the hills and mountains and flying near me on the coast because of the drought. It is great to see them as it is not a regular occurrence at all 😀 ❤️ 🙏🏽 🦜 🦋 🦘 🐬 🐳 🌺 🌹 🌈
The first time I was is Oz, one landed on my foot. I was thrilled beyond belief. It is why I had to come back! 🦜
They could be called Christmas parrots – red and green. Beautiful colouring on these birds. Great photos, nice and clear and bright.

I lived in Pasadena – city of the wild parrots of unknown origin 😄 – and I have no idea of the species of parrots there, but many were red and blue. 😊
We have Amazon parrots in San Diego too! Some species of parrots are doing better in the urban areas they escaped into, then they are in the wild, which is a sad fact, but I am glad they are thriving somewhere. 🦜

Yes. A short life for a captive parrot. Many pet parrots live past their owners life, creating problems for the parrot.

Parrots seem to me to be constant and reluctant winners of every beauty pageant they never entered, which is why we tend to put them in cages.
Which says an awful lot about humans…and none of it good.

Wild parrots stare intently at you when you are still, quiet and watching them. I have photos of them turning their heads upside down as if to figure out what I am up too. It cracks me up. They people watch!

Australian birds are so colorful! It looks like the most colorful in the World. Although the birds from Amazon rainforest are as colorful either. 🙂 ???
The Amazon has amazingly colorful birds too. Australia’s fauna is unique though to itself though, much of it found only on the continent. I can get closer to wild parrots in Australia than anywhere else I have been in the world, including the Amazon.

They are 17 inches long. There are lots of different types of crows, so it depends. American crows can be up to 17.5 inches in length, so they are about the same size as an American crow.
Are they a large bird? Simple beautiful!
They are a medium sized parrot, right about in the middle of all parrots, size wise. They are up to 17 inches long 🦜
