Even the females are kings!

Female Kings have green heads and red bodies.

Males are the only Australian parrot with a completely red head.

Although king parrots appear red and green to us,

birds have an extra cone in their eyes that enable them to see ultraviolet wavelengths.

Under ultraviolet light, some of the King Parrots wing feathers glow with golden light, like a crown.

King Parrots mate for life and often are seen in pairs like these two.

Cheers to you from the beautiful Aussie kings~

What a lovely color!
Yes. Intelligently designed. <3
Beautiful! It’s good to see that nature has graced the female of the species with colored plumage.
In parrots, definitely yes, the females have more muted color, but still they are completely stunning creatures.
Oh, how lovely. Birds mating for life is so sweet.
Shame we can’t see the ultraviolet spectrum.
Both things are true, and so many bird species do, mate for life. Maybe life is much more colorful for them 🦜
Their feathers already vibrant, adding another spectrum light would be something even more amazing I would imagine. Bird males seem to have more colorful than female ones.
Yes, the reasons why this is true are really pretty complicated and fascinating to me. If you are interested check out: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/why-are-male-birds-more-c/
Gorgeous!
Yes they are 🦜
Conspicuous in their flamboyance, they make a very striking couple Cindy. Such panache! 😀
For some quirky reason I’m reminded of ‘his’ and ‘hers’ towels in a newly-wed’s first home 😀
Have a wonderful week,
Take care 🙏

Well, they are a color coordinated, matching set….. Mother Nature was feeling especially artistic with the parrot species. They look just like something designed by the world’s most talented designer. Be well my friend 🦜
These are the sweetest looking birds–but I know they’re likely also very chattery!
They are actually quiet parrots, compared to other parrots and certainly compared to cockatoos who like to shriek. They are shy, quiet, sweet parrots. 🦜
These parrots are so gorgeous! When I was in Kauai recently, I was reacquainted with the thousands of green-coated parakeets who live in the South end of the island. They roost at night in palm trees near resorts and make a heck of a noise as they “return to the roost.’
How wonderful! I have never seen them. I will look out for them next time I am there 🦜
You can’t miss them at dusk! 🙂 Right outside The Beach House.
I just love how much these brilliant creatures adapt, and I love how you notice them.
Love these guys!! Thanks Cindy 💛
Mucha appreciated Val & be well my friend <3

The Queen Parrot!
Gorgeous shots, Cindy!!!
She is a Queen, but also a King, which means she is more royal than all royalty. You have to admit, she rocks royalty. Love to you Resa <3
“birds have an extra cone in their eyes that enable them to see ultraviolet wavelengths.”
How groovy is that!!!
Yah, how amazing is that? Birds are already the most colorful creatures on the planet, according to our eyes, and they see more color spectrum than us? How groovy is that? <3 🦜
My goodness, they are beauties. The feathers under the ultraviolet light are amazing. Thank you for these magnificent photos, Cindy!
Thank you more Jennie for appreciating our planet’s precious creatures <3 🦜
You are welcome, Cindy. 😍
<3 🦜

Simply beautiful.

Wow, beautiful bird
Happy you enjoyed him Lisa & cheers my friend 🦜
and i bet they are smarter than the average bear too!
Oh yes, they are very clever critters, but don’t tell your bears. 🦜
bears are very easy going, they don’t fret about such things.
It’s true. A bit like Baloo…..🐻
yep! Loved the 2016 version but preferred the voices in the 67 original!
Yep! They were all good. They put forward the novel concept that animals are quite similar emotionally to people.
good point!
<3
The only king here is ME…. but you females are smarter hence, nice shot of that bird, beautiful as always
Thanks Charly & love to your beautiful mother <3
Love to you Charly. Lots of it, which you deserve.

One of our most beautiful birds Cindy, and beautifully photographed, they are very prevalent down my way here in Australia. Kind regards.
Lucky you! I am in awe of your parrots 🦘
They’re beautiful! It’s almost like they’re wearing red long underwear.
Laughing….It does look just like that! 🦜
Stunning colors! The red headed male is gorgeous. Thank you for sharing these images while you are traveling. 💖🦜💗
We are actually home now, but I still have Oz photos to post so I am very happy you enjoyed them Amy & cheers to you 🦜
💖💓
Beautiful. I wonder if that extra cone makes the male parrot look as if he has a halo!
Last year I saw an Indigo Bunting for the first time. They only fly through our area.
Though our nights are still chilly spring is on the way! And with Daylight Savings we have more daylight! Cheers, Jules
Lucky you! I have never seen an Indigo Bunting. Cheers to you Jules and be well.
At least that’s what I thought it was… An all blue, blue bird. Not a Stellar’s Jay 🙂
Wonderful <3
What an adorable bird. I am lucky enough to have the peach-faced African parrots in my back garden. (which I am sure I have mentioned already). lol
You are VERY lucky! I would love to have parrots in my garden 🦜
They only come if there is food and not a lot of movement by people. I do enjoy them.
Wonderful ♡´・ᴗ・`♡
I love seeing Australian King Parrots — they’re so bright and colorful, easy to identify and big birds. Your photos here are excellent, and I really liked hearing that they see each other in golden light. So royal.
So pleased you enjoyed them. They are my kind of royalty and no bowing required!
They are literally brilliant!
Agreed <3
Very pretty birds
They think you have excellent taste! 😉 <3
