Tropical Kingbird & Great Kisskadee~

Two new birds for me! The first five photos are Tropical King Birds.

The Tropical Kingbird identification is a late edition correction provided for me by Teresa Robeson, a brilliant blogging friend @ teresarobeson.wordpress.com

Thank you Teresa! Thrilled you, and your family member, helped identify another new species for me.

She clairified this bird was either a Couch or Tropical Kingbird.

It’s location points to it being a Tropical Kingbird,

a member of the tyrant flycatcher family.

The final three photos are Great Kissdadees also in the tyrant flycatcher family.

Kisskadees are not only beautiful, but bold and will chase away monkeys, raptors and snakes.

Tropical Kingbirds and Kiskadees can be found in Southern Texas, Mexico and Central/South America. Tropical Kingbirds have a similar range but can also be seen in Southern Arizona.

Like most birdies, both species are avid people watchers.

  2. I’d never heard of this one, Cindy, but I love his golden yellow feathers! And his little black facial mask! He must be bold though, to chase away monkeys!!

  6. Next time I am in Southern Texas, I’ll keep my eyes open for one. Interesting to note that he is high enough on the “pecking order” to scare away such things as monkeys and snakes. It is rather gorgeous. Thanks Cindy. Where are you In Mexico?

  11. My comment yesterday seems to have been swallowed…eek…but that’s okay, since I needed to add to it anyway. 😉

    I showed this post to my older (expert birder) kid who’s home for the holidays from grad school, and they said that the penultimate photo is a Great Kiskadee, but the other photos are likely Couch’s or Tropical Kingbirds…we couldn’t quite figure out which because they’re nearly identical.

    Love the gorgeous photos and the sunny yellows! 💛

    1. Oh my! How fascinating. Thank them for the fascinating information and I think they are right. The photos I took on 12/14 are kisdadees. I will maybe post more of them. They are photos 5 & 6 in my post and all the other photos taken on 12/15 are possibly Kingbirds missing the white stripe on the head. I will post the correction and site you. Both are both new birds to me and I jazzed to see them both. Please thank your relative for me (ꈍ∇ꈍ)

    That is the brightest yellow I believe I’ve ever seen!!
