Sandhill Seaside Society~

Why go it alone on a seaside holiday,

when vacations are more fun shared.

Sandhills eschew solitude,

preferring to gambol about in groups.

Cheers to you from the vacationing Sandhills at The Salton Sea~

  1. Well this area is one natural thrill after another! Aren’t they gorgeous. I love that they can be left alone in this reserve, unbothered by knuckleheads !

  2. Wonderful photos and a nice storyboard to go with it.

Interesting that Sandhill cranes, brolga, white-naped cranes, Siberian cranes, Sarus cranes, and even the Eurasian common crane all have a brilliant patch of bare red skin on them. All seem to have similar cranish behaviour: feeding in groups, courtship dances and so on. Sadly the Sarus and the white-naped are endangered and the Siberian is on the brink of extinction.

    1. I love your “cranish behavior” quote. I know just what you mean. I have two Manchurian Cranes on lamps from Japan on my bedside tables. Are they any left now? They too have the red patch. These Sandhills are mysterious to me. They winter near me (a two hour drive) in the middle of nowhere (Salton Sea, Southern California Desert) and they are so super skittish here. This year they let me get closer. They probably remember me. Birds do remember. I know they are more approachable in other more populated areas. I was shocked out of my skin to see them doing their courtship dance in the northern arctic on Hudson Bay, but I couldn’t approach because of the Polar Bears. It is not just sad is it, the crane, so important across cultures in art and symbolism, such beautiful creatures, destroyed by us 𓅼𓅓𓅮𓅣𓅰

    Hi Cindy
Haven’t seen Sandhills since I was a boy on the farm ! Hope you’re not close to any of the fires out there. The destruction is unimaginable and and so very sad.
    Xo Paul

    1. Yes, it is horrific. Thank you for thinking of us Paul. We get our power shut off for days whenever the wind kicks up. It is supposed to kick up tonight through Wednesday. So it is a bit tense waiting to see if an arsonist will take advantage. Hope you are well cuz and hope you had a Blessed Christmas my friend. Take good care დ
