These gorgeous creatures,

are Grey Buckeye Butterflies,

a newly identified sub-species, found in south western North America. The species was first identified in 2016.

Grey Buckeyes are genetically and morphologically distinct and from Eastern Buckeye Butterflies.

All I know is they are beautiful and I love having them here!
Cheers to you from the beautiful Grey Buckeyes~

Absolutely gorgeous!
Exactly my thoughts about these beauties დ
Isn’t it amazing that a new species was found in 2016? It is to me. Nature is so varied, we are still finding new things!
It is wonderful isn’t it, amidst all the negative news, these beauties are flying and pollinating დ
Oh yes, we have to look for the beauty!
Their markings are gorgeous. They look familiar, maybe I’ve seen the eastern species.
Yes, you may well have. There is an eastern Buckeye, but apparently there are subtle morphology differences and definite genetic differences დ
Thanks teacher! 😀
Test on Tuesday! დდ
LOL. Can you send me the crib notes?
Done. Anything for you Brad 😉
I surrender!
Laughing…….
Do you ever feel like somebody’s watching you?!
Smiling…… Birds always do!! 😉
Now if you could snap one of a bird using binoculars, Cindy, that would be amazing!🤩 😂
😉 😉
What a gorgeous species of butterfly!
My thoughts exactly დ
Those are gorgeous images, Cindy and a beautiful Butterfly!
Thanks so much. I was so taken by them an they posed so nicely too! დ
Absolutely wonderful!
Awww, makes me smile დ
It’s a beauty! ❤️😁
Yes indeed დ
I think we’re being watched… If I was a bird, I’d steer away from trying to eat that face. (You know, this wall paper here looks like a couple of eyes, too.)
Smiling, clever nature has complicated designs that are gorgeous too! დ
Lovley butterfly…(Suzanne)
Thank you Suzanne & cheers to you დ
What a beautiful new species! Mother Nature never stops showing us her wonderful creations…
Thank God for her დდ
Beautiful! How do you get them to pose? I’m sort of kidding, but the butterflies around here just keep flitting around and I can’t get a decent picture.
Some butterflies are more flighty than others and others are more mellow, just like people! 😉
WOW! They look exceptionally pretty. I haven’t seen this species before. Thank you, Cindy, for sharing your amazing shots. 🙂
Thank you more for your always kind appreciation my friend დ
It’s just truly astounding to think Earth still churns out new species, Cindy! Gorgeous and how cool you can see these!
So happy you enjoyed Terri. Hopefully these beauties will thrive and prosper დ
Marvelous! Thanks for the great photos.
You are very welcome Rebecca. I am happy you enjoyed them დ
These are beautiful! All the colours of the rainbow are seen in their wings!
You’re right, and so artistically designed დ
What a beauty! Butterflies of any kind are a rare sight in our urban apartment complex.
Thank you Rosaliene. They always seem like joyful omens to me დ
Stunning photos of these magical creatures. Nature is so clever – the ‘eyes’ on the wings act as decoys so predators won’t attack the butterfly’s actual head.
Remarkable that it can be so beautiful too! დ
What amazingly beautiful clarity. Really lovely!
Honored, thank you sincerely Helene დ
Absolutely stunning!
Thank you very much დ
Great!! The patterns the wings look just like eyes. I glad to hear news about new species found.
I think the eyes are to scare away predators who may think they are being watched. Always good to hear about new species instead of newly extinct ones დ
WOW! Beautiful!! xox
Thank you Lara. I was captured by their beauty დ
Cindy, what a gorgeous gift to behold! Thank you for sharing such beauty!
Thank you so much more for appreciating them Eleanor & cheers დ
Amazing! I’m familiar with buckeyes. The gray on these is such a subtle and delicate shade! Very pretty!
I agree with you Kathy. I hadn’t seen them up close like this before and I thought they were so beautiful დ
Amazing beauty well-captured, Cindy!
Thanks Eliza & cheers my friend დ
Great eyes, Cindy. I wonder if they are named after buck’s eyes or buckeyes, I could see either one fitting. –Curt
Good question for which I have no answer დ
🙂
