We have a community of roadrunners living inside our fences at The Holler.

They have become quite used to us, and shelter in our garages or patio when it rains.

This baby roadrunner showed no fear when I approached, but I didn’t press it by getting too close. I would like to stay his friend!

You can see he still has some baby down on his back.

Cheers to you from The Holler’s fearless baby beep-beep~
Note: For those with enquiring minds regarding the tricky controversy over ‘beep vs meep,’ wiki clarifies that although commonly quoted as “meep meep”, the current owner of all trademarks lists “beep, beep” as the roadrunner’s main sound. 😉

beautiful 💕💕
Happy you think so & thank you დ
Hope the Holler is a long way from any fire.
Thank you. We are too close for comfort and the fire season is just starting დ
You will be in our thoughts.

How cute! And that first photo is amazing
Grazie mille დ
They are such cool birds. I used to spend a lot of time camping in the desert out around Anzo Borrego and loved getting as close as I could. They are bright, inquisitive, and really fun to watch. Thanks for these great photos.
I have spend much of my life in Anza Borrego and the roadrunners are an emblematic part of the experience, so I fully relate to your experiences. They do find us fascinating don’t they! And they love people watching, especially when you’re sleeping! 😉
Yeah, the little foxes are great as well. On a hot night, I woke up in the dark with a little fox matter-of-factly sitting three feet from me watching me breathe. Even when he/she knew I was awake and looking back, she just sat, amiable and fearless. We had a great conversation. I’ll never forget it.
Oh yes! Sleeping humans are interesting to wild creatures. It is almost like they are shocked, thinking, “Wow, they are capable of shutting up!”
Have you seen the Channel Island Foxes?
Thanks for these charming photos. I’d love to see these birds for real, but images from you and on TV documentaries will have to do!
I am very pleased you enjoyed seeing them Margaret & cheers to you my friend დ
Beautiful photos, Cindy! I love these birds and see them most every time I take a ride outside the city. Love the old Warner Brothers cartoons! BeepBeep!! 😂❤️
Wonderful you see them and meep-meep back at you! დ
Registro mto lindo!!!👏👏
Obrigada! დ
I didn’t realize their feathers were so beautiful!
From a distance they just look brown, up close they are iridescent! დ
How wonderful that you get to share your world with these beautiful birds! I didn’t realize they had green feathers – thanks to your fine photography, now I do! <3
Hugs to you Eliza & thank you! დ
Baby beep-beep is adorable. 🙂 Lovely photos.
Thank you! He is pretty irresistible. დ
Some just looks better when they turn there backs, a good performance to both of you.
Agreed. Lovely view from the back on these birds! 😉
Too precious for words, Cindy! That’s what we lose when fires break out. Everything loses. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you as well. I remember Calif fires. My last husband worked for Glendale fire. So I know. I’m glad the RR have you place to shelter. They know you are a good soul.
Awwww….The thought of the loss of more of the west’s precious forests and creatures is heartbreaking. Fire is the worst of the worst. The firefighters are heroes. God Bless them and their families დ
sweetness and tender…☺️💛 thanks Cindy ~ sending you joy 💫 hedy
Visa versa 2UX2 Hedy დ
Such cute-looking birds. They also look quite cheeky. 😅
They are indeed cheeky and just as entertaining to watch as the cartoon! 😉
Amazing images, Cindy. We saw the cartoon character roadrunner when we were children, but this is the first time I’ve seen a living roadrunner, so it was interesting to see the actual bird.
How wonderful! I feel honored and pleased to make the introduction დ
I haven’t seen one since I was a child. Thanks for sharing!
So happy to reacquaint you! დ
Absolutely precious! 😍
They are a creature that always makes one smile 🙂
They’re adorable Cindy! I had no idea how pretty their feathers are.😊
They are wonderful. So beautifully designed to blend in perfectly with the foliage at The Holler. But somehow they always manage to stand out! 😉
The color, texture, and pattern of baby beep beep’s feathers in the first photo are just stunning!
Thank you sincerely Liz & cheers დ
You’re welcome, Cindy. I love how your photography has shown me bird feathers in a way I’d never seen before.
Your kind comment makes me smile. Thank you Liz დ
You’re welcome, Cindy.
დდ
What a marvelous bird! Your images are just wonderful, capturing its personality.
Thank you so much. Roadrunner really are big personalities. I love living with them! დ
My pleasure.
დ დ
What a beautiful bird. I’m always surprised by the intricate patterns of feathers. I hope the fire avoids your area. I know it’s tense now and likely will be until what one hopes are rains in November…
Exactly. Thank you very much for caring. It is the lot hot wait until the rains in November დ
That are gorgeous Cindy! It must be so special to have them on your property!
It is so amazing, when it rains we open the side doors to the garages, and they come in wet, fluffed-up and miserable, and ride out the rain inside where it is dry. I have never taken their photos doing this because I don’t want to frighten them. Lovely to hear from you Maiko & stay safe my friend დ
I’ve never seen a real roadrunner, only the cartoon one. This little guy is way better looking. I hope the fires don’t reach the Holler, and that rain comes soon to the western US.
Thank you very much Audrey. I appreciate your concern and share your wishes. The roadrunner thinks you have excellent taste! 😉
That is so special, Cindy! Lucky you! We don’t have road runners up here on Vancouver Island, and don’t get to see them like you do, so it was a treat for me to see the closeup of the colour of their feathers. I had no idea they had such beautiful green feathers on their back and sides. Having only seen them at a distance when on holiday, or when I’ve seen them on TV, I thought they were a boring little brown bird. But they really are very pretty. Thanks for enlightening me.
Love your perceptions which are so true. They are masters of camouflage, blending into the brown in the distance, but up close they are iridescent and beautiful დ
Nice shots!
Grazie დ
Thank you so much for sharing these baby photos Cindy! Adorable 🙂
Thank you more for appreciating the babies my friend დ
Keep an eye peeled for Wily Coyote. 😄
They are already here enmass. I woke up a few nights ago, and actually surprised one, hunting inside our fences, too close to me. They are wile-e! 😉
Spiffing photography, Cindy!
I’ve never seen a road-runner before in real life, so these were rather special to me, bless you. ♥
Ahhh, blessings back to you kind friend and thank you დ
awww… they’re really cute little birds!
awesome pics.
I <3 people who <3 roadrunners! დ
Sweet. I love these guys.
I do too, glad you do! https://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/life-downstairs
Cindy, these are absolutely gorgeous. A Roadrunners is my favorite bird in California, but I never seem to get a good look of them, because they seem so shy. I also had no idea they had bits of olive green in them; these shots expose every little detail, and I am just having a blast looking at these wonderful pictures . Thank you!
Your wonderful words make me smile and make me happy I posted. Thank you so much & cheers to you! დ
🙂 🙂
Cindy, they are wonderful. I should love to see them in action and also perhaps get a bit closer…
They definitely disappear in a poof of dust, just like the cartoon, if they think you are getting too close! 😉
What a treat to see them closed up in their natural habitat. And, they are so photogenic! 😉
He definitely was ready for his close up!! 😉 Cheers to you Lea~
Some just looks better when they turn there backs, a good performance to both of you.
Thank you Hans. Your kind comments made me smile 🙂
Such inquisitive and fascinating birds. Always remind me of the US.
Hope the fires are not too close to you there. Stay safe.
Thank you Nadia. Your concern is much appreciated, and yes the roadrunner is a rather iconic symbol of the American west to me as well დ
I learnt something. Yes, I know, I’m a bit slow 😀 I did not realise that the famous road runner had that lovely metalic green on its back and the underbelly was a yellow. My image of the TV road runner has now been updated, it will never be the same 😀 ❤️ 🙏🏼 🦋
Great shots dear lady…er, there’s no ‘coyote’ around with them is there? 😂 🤣
Wile E. and all his numerous friends are indeed her in packs, but I am happy to report I have never seen either Meep-Meep or Wile E. chase each other! Cheers to you Mark დ
Aw…I love these little critters – enchanting 🙂
I <3 people who <3 roadrunners Polly! დ
They don’t look much like the one Wylie constantly tried to have for dinner, (loved that cartoon). Even as a kid, I wondered why he just didn’t by dinner with the money he spent at ACME, LOL! Their feathers make such a pretty pattern. I need to come back for a prolonged visit. I’m missing all the fun! xK
It is lovely to hear from you and I am happy you stopped by! Wile E. and the Meep-Meep definitely coexist at The Holler but I have never seen one try and catch the other! Cheers to you my friend დ
Such gorgeous photos of beautiful birds – thank you Cindy
Thank you more for appreciating them Sheree დ
My pleasure Cindy
დ
How wonderful Cindy, I think this is the very first time I’ve seen these beautiful birds for real. And they are gorgeous. Wonderful captures Cindy, and so happy to have found your post the same time I’m browsing my reader this morning.
Have a beautiful Sunday 💚🙏
I am so pleased to make the introduction Sue. They would love to meet you! Stay safe & well my friend დ
Thank YOU for sharing them. 🙏
დდ
Nice shots, Cindy. Like many others, I had no idea they had so much color about them. Living in New England, pretty much all I know about roadrunners I learned from Warner Brothers. 🙂
Happy you enjoyed Steve. They actually don’t really meep or beep, but they do have quite complex vocalizations. დ
That first photo took my breath away.
So happy you enjoyed it & thank you Emma დ
As beautiful as ever
Merci beaucoup Derrick დ
Gorgeous photos, Cindy – how lovely it must be to watch them fledge and grow. Keeping everything crossed that you are not affected by fire this season. xxx
Much appreciated Liz & wonderful to hear from you დ
🥰💕
Beautiful
Thank you Kamal დ
I was interested to see that the feather on the road runner’s back are qyite green rather than brown, which is what I was expecting.
Yes they are iridescent in the sunlight. It helps them blend perfectly with mix of browns, beiges and greens in their environment დ
Cute snaps.🙂
Grazie დ
I love the way your pictures capture “Personality” cheeky is a good adj. Waves good morning, stay safe.. my sister has quality control problems with the air, I hope you keep a mask handy..
Thanks much. Roadrunners have BIG personalities! Cheers to you my friend დ
These birds are cute, thank you for sharing. 🙂
Thank you for appreciating them დ
So reassuring to be reminded that the natural world continues to exist — and patiently co-exist with us human beings. Thank you for sharing images of this road runner with the rest of us!
What a insightful and sensitive comment Will. You make me happy I posted. Be well my friend დ
How gorgeously feathered this little one is. I would want to keep him as a friend, too.
They routinely watch us through the windows. They are hilarious! დ
The look in their eyes, a bit like Jack Nicholson in shinning 🙂
Yes indeed! You are perceptive. They are members of the cuckoo family and they are intense and lethal hunters. დ
Reblogged this on Musings on Life & Experience and commented:
Cindy Knoke sent some pictures of a baby Roadrunner (beep-beep) whose family lives nearby.
Hugs to you kind lady & thank you for all you do! დ
