My heart. (click/tap to enlarge.

It is a cardinal rule,

that cardinals,

who I have only seen,

on four seperate occasions,

in my life,

make excellent friends.

They drop by unannounced,

and make your day.

Cheers to you,

from Maui’s non-native Red Crested Cardinals~

Gorgeous AND adorable! 😍😍 I couldn’t remember if you had mentioned it before, but when I looked them up (of course I did…LOL!), I found out that they’re actually a species of tanager not cardinals! That is so wild because they look just like the North American cardinals. LOL!
So happy you like them, and yes. Paroaria coronata. They are named because of the uncanny resemblence. They hop right into our abode! დ
Beauties!
დდდ
You can call them true native if they were born in Hawaii.😊 These are non-native, introduced in 1930 from Brazil, not related to the cardinal familia, but are tanagers. Cardinals used to have a more expansive range in NA than they have now. Like my dad, I have seen none, not even in aviaries. My grandpa saw a few in the wild when he was a boy in the 1930s.
Yes. Paroaria coronata. They escaped from cages in 1929 and successfully bred. I have seen them in Argentina where they are native, but never in Brazil. Birds do manage to get around! დ
I do like their coloring. I’m always amazed at the babies, nearly full grown, are wanting to be fed by mama bird or daddy bird.
Yes. I am amazed by the sacrifice of mama and daddy birds.
Gorgeous…!!!
Thank you very much Rajani დ
They are beautiful birds, I wonder how they got there?
Apparently they were released from cages in 1929 and the rest is history! დ
I call that an oops!
We had two nesting pairs in our backyard for ages, but I never got to see the babies. What a delight!
Oh lucky you! I only get to see them when I travel and rarely even then. They are exotics to me დ
I love their orange/red color!
Mother Nature rocks her palette with the birdies & the fishies! დ
How beautiful! I’ve never seen that type of cardinal before!
Happy to make the introduction Ann & pleased you enjoyed them დ
Wow! Awesome…I’ve never seen these, but we do live on a street named for them!!
Thanks so much for the pictures!!
You are so very welcome Sheila. I am happy you enjoyed them & cheers to you my friend დ
Your beautiful little friends made my day, too! Thanks for sharing your spectacular photos, Cindy.
Smiling…. Thank you for your thoughtfulness Susan & cheers to you დ
These don’t look anything like the Cardinals we have, Cindy! Nevertheless, they’re beautiful birdies. I find it hard to get photos of ours — they rarely stop to pose, ha!
You are right Debbie. They aren’t actually in the cardinal family. They are tanagers. Heaven knows why they are named Red Crested Cardinals. I have only seen and photographed your cardinal once. It was quite a thrill დ
I keep trying, but they’re so FAST!! And they just refuse to sit still while I focus the camera. One of these days though!
Some birds really don’t like having their picture taken! I can relate 😉 😉
Cardinals are my favorite, but I’ve never seen a red crested cardinal before, and it’s gorgeous. You captured great shots of them, Cindy. Thank you for teaching me about a beautiful new bird!
You are so welcome. I am happy to make the introduction. They are actually in the tanager family but their name is Red Crested Cardinal. Bird names make no sense დ
This is a stunningly beautiful bird.
Thanks for the terrific shots, Cindy! ❦❦
They are dressed to impress! Thanks much Resa & be well my friend დ
დდ
Beautiful birds and stunning photos, as always Cindy. The detail on the feathers is amazing.
So appreciated Helene. Thank you & take good care დ
Aren’t they a handsome pair? Gorgeous photos, Cindy, and a nice take-away from an otherwise harrowing time in Maui. The islands have been overwhelmed with non-native birds, snakes, grasses, and so much more. I don’t know that they’ll ever be able to restore what was. You are a good soul.
Visa versa 2UX2 Alys! Thank you for all the good you do in this world. It matters. Take good care my friend დ
❤️
They are beautiful and so unusual. Just gorgeous. And, of course, amazing photographs.
I am so grateful to have a thoughtful friend like you Gigi. Thank you sincerely & be safe and well დ

Cindy, I have never seen this beautiful cardinal. I have only seen a red (completely red) cardinal. Seeing one in winter against all the white is true beauty. Your photos are wonderful. Thank you!
Thank you sincerely Jennie. I would so love to see a Northern Cardinal against the winter snow. I have seen the amazing photos of this დ
You are welcome, Cindy. Isn’t it interesting how birds are different across the world?
Yes. Fascinating.
😀
May we all follow the same rule ❤️❤️❤️
დდდ
Ahh is this what they call amazing ‘pope-paganda’? Lol! Great shots as always, my friend! ♱♡‿♡♰
Smiling…… They are pope-acrats! ♱♡‿♡♰

Wonderful fotos from lovely birds. Thank you for sharing.
You are very welcome. I am happy you like them & cheers to you Marie დ
Absolutely precious birdies and gorgeous photos.
Very happy you enjoyed them and thank you kindly! Much appreciated დ
I’ve never seen this type of cardinal–always just the fully red male, and much duller, mostly tan female. This kind with just the color on their heads is striking!
So happy to make a new introduction Kathy and very pleased you enjoyed them. Cheers to you my friend დ
Fantastic! They have so much personality. Thank you for bringing beautiful nature to our screens!
Aww….. You are so welcome Michele. You make me happy I posted დ
Welcome, Cindy. Love your shares!

So happy you enjoyed & you are most welcome Mary დ
Amazing beauty.
So happy you think so & cheers to you my friend დ
So cute!
QT’s!! დ
What cute little cardinals! 🐦
Friendly little guys too. Not the least bit scared დ
We have cardinals in our yard all the time (and love them), but I’ve apparently never seen young ones, i.e. ones that look like this.
You have the real cardinals. Who knows why these birds are named Red Crested Cardinals when they are actually Tanagers! A rose by any other name….. I would love to see more of your cardinals. I have only seen them once დ
We have lots of cardinals here, but I’ve never seen any like these. ❤️ Happy to hear you’re safe!
Much appreciated. Thank you Crystal & take good care დ
Ah, my dear friend – you always entice me to come back to your posts at least three times.
Merci beaucoup mon Ami Rebecca დდდ

Thank you Alison. Hope all is well with you and Don my friend დდ
Beautiful! 💕
Thank you დ
There are cardinals that hang out on the feeder on our balcony. They are such beautiful birds.💖
So lucky you! Would love to see this დ
Oh how cute are they! Great shots.
Thank you very much დ
You’re welcome!

Beautiful birds, Cindy. And well captured. The red head reminds me of an Australian bird called the Gang Gang Cockatoo. Have a look on Google and see the similar red head.
Thank you. I photographed a Gang Gang in Oz. Was stunned დ
Aw cool!
Very cool Ozzie birdie.
I thought those were the Maui Cardinals! You must be visiting Wailea or someplace else away from Laihina.
You are right about the birds Susan. We were in West Maui during the fires დ
So cute! I can almost hear their call. I was just on the patio watching the birds at the birdbath.
Sweet. Love to watch birdies in their bath! 😉 😉
Amazing cardinals. I remember seeing a lot of the red ones in the South. (There’s a football team too, right?)
All well, Cindy?
All is well, thank you. Happy you stopped by & hope all is well with you დ
All well too, Merci. Flying “home” this afternoon. (Wherever that is) 😉🤗
It is wherever your heart is….. Smiling. Be well.
🙏🏻
Lovely! <3
Much appreciated Carol. Thank you & cheers to you დ
Fantastic photos Cindy. Just gorgeous
Awww…. So appreciated Charlotte. Thank you very much. I love your midnight gown designed by Resa. I want to see you wearing it! It would be stunning on you დდ
Excellent photos.
Thank you დ
Beautiful. They also bring hello messages from the beyond. <3
That’s amazing. Birds have a reputation for doing this დდ
Yes. 🙂 Robins too 🙂 x

Hi Cindy!! It’s been awhile since I checked your blog, and this is a fun one! Somehow I find it hard to believe you’ve only seen cardinals 4 times! You are such a bird watcher, and photographer!! These pictures are lovely, by the way!! 🙂
Hi Katie. Lovely to hear from you! So happy you stopped by. It is true, I have only seen and photographed cardinals on four seperate trips. So each time is a major thrill. Hope you are well my friend & take good care დ
Take you my sweet friend!! I don’t know if you read my latest blog, but I really wanted you to see it–the 10 year anniversary of my son’s death is soon, and I wrote a blog called, “Reflections”. (In our friendship–we communicate through our blogs–so I wanted you to see this. 🙂 Love you!! https://katiesencouragementforyou.home.blog/2023/09/02/reflections/
I just read your pos which was utterly beautiful and incredibly moving. “Sean’s death has brought me to the end of myself, and to accepting the mysteries of God.” I am so impressed with your process, your self discovery, and your faith. And most of all I am deeply touched by your abiding and never ending love for beautiful Sean. Love to you my dear friend and God Bless you დდ
So sweet 💕🥰
