Baby Cardinals Rule~

My heart. (click/tap to enlarge.

It is a cardinal rule,

that cardinals,

who I have only seen,

on four seperate occasions,

in my life,

make excellent friends.

They drop by unannounced,

and make your day.

Cheers to you,

from Maui’s non-native Red Crested Cardinals~

  1. Gorgeous AND adorable! 😍😍 I couldn’t remember if you had mentioned it before, but when I looked them up (of course I did…LOL!), I found out that they’re actually a species of tanager not cardinals! That is so wild because they look just like the North American cardinals. LOL!

You can call them true native if they were born in Hawaii.😊 These are non-native, introduced in 1930 from Brazil, not related to the cardinal familia, but are tanagers. Cardinals used to have a more expansive range in NA than they have now. Like my dad, I have seen none, not even in aviaries. My grandpa saw a few in the wild when he was a boy in the 1930s.

    1. Yes. Paroaria coronata. They escaped from cages in 1929 and successfully bred. I have seen them in Argentina where they are native, but never in Brazil. Birds do manage to get around! დ

I do like their coloring. I’m always amazed at the babies, nearly full grown, are wanting to be fed by mama bird or daddy bird.

  3. These don’t look anything like the Cardinals we have, Cindy! Nevertheless, they’re beautiful birdies. I find it hard to get photos of ours — they rarely stop to pose, ha!

    1. You are right Debbie. They aren’t actually in the cardinal family. They are tanagers. Heaven knows why they are named Red Crested Cardinals. I have only seen and photographed your cardinal once. It was quite a thrill დ

    1. You are so welcome. I am happy to make the introduction. They are actually in the tanager family but their name is Red Crested Cardinal. Bird names make no sense დ

  4. Aren’t they a handsome pair? Gorgeous photos, Cindy, and a nice take-away from an otherwise harrowing time in Maui. The islands have been overwhelmed with non-native birds, snakes, grasses, and so much more. I don’t know that they’ll ever be able to restore what was. You are a good soul.

  6. Cindy, I have never seen this beautiful cardinal. I have only seen a red (completely red) cardinal. Seeing one in winter against all the white is true beauty. Your photos are wonderful. Thank you!

  7. I’ve never seen this type of cardinal–always just the fully red male, and much duller, mostly tan female. This kind with just the color on their heads is striking!

    1. You have the real cardinals. Who knows why these birds are named Red Crested Cardinals when they are actually Tanagers! A rose by any other name….. I would love to see more of your cardinals. I have only seen them once დ

  9. Beautiful birds, Cindy. And well captured. The red head reminds me of an Australian bird called the Gang Gang Cockatoo. Have a look on Google and see the similar red head.

  10. Hi Cindy!! It’s been awhile since I checked your blog, and this is a fun one! Somehow I find it hard to believe you’ve only seen cardinals 4 times! You are such a bird watcher, and photographer!! These pictures are lovely, by the way!! 🙂

    1. Hi Katie. Lovely to hear from you! So happy you stopped by. It is true, I have only seen and photographed cardinals on four seperate trips. So each time is a major thrill. Hope you are well my friend & take good care დ

        1. I just read your pos which was utterly beautiful and incredibly moving. “Sean’s death has brought me to the end of myself, and to accepting the mysteries of God.” I am so impressed with your process, your self discovery, and your faith. And most of all I am deeply touched by your abiding and never ending love for beautiful Sean. Love to you my dear friend and God Bless you დდ
