Check out los lobos del mar playing in Peru!
This group was photographed in Los Islas Palominos off the coast of Lima.
They were quite curious about their unusual human visitors,
and kept popping up to get a better view!
This bull was hanging out near La Serena Chile.
Southern bulls are more massive and furry than their northern counterparts,
and they seem more threatening too!
These happy guys were playing around Islas Balestras near Pisco Peru.

We just met our first southern sea lion at a rescue park in St. Thomas. He was huge – 750 pounds at seven years old.
Yes, they are gigantic, especially compared to their northern cousins!

Great shots, Cindy. Thanks for sharing. As a SCUBA diver, I’ve encountered sea lions and seals on many occasions here on the west coast of British Columbia. I can assure you that they don’t move slowly in the water! Nothing scarier than having a several hundred pound sea lion heading right at you and veering away at the last minute. These species look considerably larger than our west coasters.
Yes, I know exactly what you are saying. The northern version were all over the beaches where I grew up and swam. But these southern ones seem perfectly adapted to the harsher reality of the southern ocean.

We have visited several island groups and each has around 5000 sea lions and millions of birds!

Yes, when you head into the southern latitudes, the mammals tend to get more massive and tougher.

Wow, that’s a LOT of sea lions, Cindy! I wonder why the southern ones have so much more fur than their northern kin. Seems like the cold would encourage fat and fur growth!
It gets colder at the far southern latitudes so they need the extra protection.

These have a gorgeous colouring on their fur and they look like they’re having fun in the water. You write that they look threatening … I hope this is correct and that they are quite safe – you seem to be very close to them at some stages. Bull sea lions can be a bit aggressive if you approach them too closely, so I keep safe distance. I love having you travel with me! You make the experience better. <3

Techinically they are Patagonian Sea Lions, but the locals call them Lobos del Mar.

Those bulls look like cuddly puppy dogs….until they open their mouth to bark (howl ?) . What actually would you say they do? Yelp perhaps? I must go Google that 😀 I think they must be naive to the dangers of mankind hey? I hope they’ll always be safe and protected <3 xk

I saw sea lions at SEA WORLD, ORLANDO. They looked a bit different from these. The pictures are too pretty.
