“Like a true nature’s child,
born to be wild.”
The wild grizzlies in these photos were photographed in The Knight Inlet in British Columbia Canada. The inlet is contained within the largest temperate rain forest on earth and has a thriving grizzly bear population.

The bears live in a remote location reachable only by float plane or small boat. We viewed bears from open air wooden platforms that are approximately 12 feet above the bears. The platforms are similar to bird hides familiar to bird watchers. Access to the platforms is carefully limited and regulated. Platform visitors are accompanied by guides. Purposely approaching wild grizzly bears without such precautions would be extremely dangerous to both humans and bears.

The bears, like this juvenile, are quite focused on consuming salmon and have devised an ingenious fishing method,

they submarine with their eyes open under water, and their ears above water, so they can listen above, as they hunt below.

They take a lot of time out from gorging to bicker and play.
Cheers to you from the stunning wild grizzlies of The Knight Inlet~

Wow. Nice to see this wild creature. 🙂 Thanks for posting these pictures. 🙂
Thank you more for appreciating the bears~
Wonderful, Cindy! Carefree & happy!! 🐻
Thank you! I was surprised they spend a lot of time playing which doen’t really fit with their public perception~
We could take lessons from them 🙂
I try to absorb the lessons all the time from wild birds and animals about how to live in a precarious world.
Wonderful to see the bears in the wild through your eyes and your camera lens.
Happy, peaceful, playing grizzly bears. If you google image search grizzly bears most of the images you see are snarling, furious bears. It’s good to know they are more dimensional than this.
I think people also interpret grizzly as grumpy which doesn’t help. 🙁
Great camera work! I’d never seen grizzlies’ submarine-like fishing technique before, so I learned something new here. No need for tools. Now that is ingenious! And that last image of them at play… so adorable! Thank you. <3
I had never seen or heard of this submarine behavior either but they do it constantly. They clearly enjoy their swimming pool!
Wonderful!!!! Keep picturing the wild.
Thank you for the encouragement!
<3
❤️❤️❤️
Grazie~
Ah Cindy, another wonderful post. Fresh salmon from the waters there are hard to beat but truly a different method of fishing. Well done capturing it. I do have some fond memories of my time in Canada. Thanks for taking me along. 😀 xx
Thank you more for joining me Lea. It makes the experience better. <3
Great experience and excellent company Cindy, what more could one ask for? <3
You got your motor running ~
Lovely bears. I’ve tried catching salmon that way. It doesn’t work whilst in the bath. 😀 😀
Bummer! You may need to expand your aquatic horizons and attempt something more like a pool!

OK, I’ll take that as my cue (runs away in shame). 🙂
cute teddy bears
They are indeed~
What a marvellous set-up – to think you were just 12 feet away from these glorious creatures.
It is absolutely amazing to have grizzly bears look you in the eye!
Wonderful to see the bears up close like this, thank you so much for sharing ☺🐾🐾
Thank you more for appreciating them!
awesome shots!
Thank you!
Amazing experiences Cindy. They look so beautiful and I love to hear, that they are taken good care of and are protected against stupid humans 🙂
Amen to that & thank you. We killed all of them in California and they are our state mascot.
Very sad to hear that Cindy, what a shame…
Amazing! I love these.
So pleased you do & thank you~
Splendid stuff.
Thank you Duncan & cheers to you~
🙂
wow, what a powerful experience, cindy.
It is. We had visited before for a day trip and always wanted to go back and stay. It is an amazing wildlife experience.
Stunning pictures, Cindy.
Thank you beary much! 🐻
This is so beautiful.Amazing work!
I am honored. Thank you kindly~
My pleasure.
What wonderful creatures: we love bears! Pip and the boys
Bears are beautific, so pleased you enjoyed them~
Yikes, 12 feet up from grizzlies is rather close. I do not recall whether grizzlies climb trees, but the black bears around us do. Do not take your lunch with you.
Oscar
Despite popular lore grizzlies can climb trees. They could attack us in the platforms but they are too busy eating and playing.

Your photographs are amazing, Cindy. 🙂
I am humbled. Thank you Ranu~
Interesting to see the activities. It is amazing that they are designed to fish even they are land animal. How they spent time indicates their intelligent. Thank you for sharing where you took these shots. Some pictures appear that you were not too far above the bear. I felt that could be a dangerous approach. You were on the safe platform that was good.
It is a fine line. On the one hand it would be foolhardy to to approach wild too grizzlies closely, on the other hand the popular lore about grizzlies is exaggerated, unless of course, you happen to experience bad luck, but, such is life. The best strategy is to follow safe bear viewing guidelines.
Very nice Cindy, just as long as he does not have in mind a photographer for lunch! 🙂
I think he finds salmon far tastier!

Wally
Very pleased you like the 🐻🐻🐻 Wally and hope you are well my friend~
Thank you, I am.
<3 <3
It doesn’t look dangerous on your pictures.
The bears are focused on the salmon which is good~
Such wonderful captures of the Grizzlies Cindy! Thanks for an other song to stay with me all day!!
Grazie! Lou Reed’s Wild Side would have worked too~
The song is stuck in my head now, but it was worth it to see these beautiful photos.
I am so glad about the bears. Song sticking is annoying though. You may have to tune in to something different to clear it out~
Cindy…your posts on the wild bears are thrilling! What a marvel of nature you are experiencing first hand.
It is so encouraging for both of us to see healthy wild animals for a change~

There goes my salmon 🙂
Greedy bears!

I’ve fished with Alaskan Brown Bears (biologically the same as Grizzlies). We were after trout, they were gorging on Sockeye. Somehow, they knew and paid us absolutely no mind. No competition. It was very humbling to be on the ground with them all around and knowing that we were not at the top of the food chain. It is something I will never forget.
Yes. I have seen a fair number of wild grizzlies and experienced all of the emotions you mention. Luckily they either moved away or looked at me and go on about their business.
Absolutely amazing photographs!!!
Humbled & honored~ <3
Can’t imagine being there watch the bears. 🙂 Well captured! I like the third especially.
Thank you for the post, Cindy! 🙂 Btw, I’m back from my vacation, need plan for the next trip. 🙂
Looks like you had a wonderful time. Such a bother to have to unpack just to repack! 🙂

They are so incredibly interesting, and beautiful, and especially I know to photograph as you did so well. Thanks for all the info too, (where located, etc.) and how you captured these awesome photos, Cindy.
Awww, so motivating and encouraging! Thank you Joyce & cheers to you my friend~
I shared your last post (of the bears) on Facebook, and also sent the link to my 3 siblings to enjoy looking at your photos and posts. I think they will enjoy it too. They are not bloggers but they love looking at photos of wildlife, birds, etc. Hope you don’t mind my sharing it. Enjoy the time in B.C. 🙂
You are most privileged. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you more for appreciating Cynthia and be well my friend~
What a magnificent animal and you got some great photos of them.
Leslie
That is the perfect word for them. They are magnificent.

More beautiful photographs of the majestic grizzlies – thank you, Cindy!
🙂
Thank you for supporting the grizzlies. They need us! <3 <3
They do, indeed! The California grizzly, which was the “golden bear” that marks that state flag, is now extinct…we must preserve the bears that still exist!
Yes. I couldn’t agree with you more. Our follies regarding wildlife are legion and must stop~
Amainzing
They are!
Fabulous shots, Cindy. Love your title. 😀
I was considering Lou’s “Walk on the Wild Side.” Hey hon………
Both are such great songs. 😎
They are but I had to go with my best choice of what the bears would prefer……

The bears and I thank you beary much for your support!
It must have been absolutely great to have observed these bears in their natural surroundings!💐
Yes. It was an incredible experience to see them happy, healthy, wild and free~
Nature has such beauty and you have captured it to perfection. Beautiful pictures
Ah, I’m honored. Thank you~
Sad that you don’t have any Grizzlies left in California. After seeing your wonderful pictures I am definitely going next year!
Wonderful. We picked the smaller, less expensive family operation and we very happy we did. I thought the viewing platform was better and there max 4 people on the boats, 6 on the platform, which gives you a more wildlife with less people. If I want to see people I can go to NYC!
: )
Thank you for bringing me so close to these amazing animals! Nice shots!
Glad you paid them a visit!
Wonderful shots!!!
Merci beaucoup~

The spirit of the bears thank you Sharon for all you do for the wild ones. Sincere gratitude to you from me for your advocacy on behalf of all creatures great and small. <3 <3
The grizzlies are magnificent, as are your photos.
It was such an honor to look into their wild eyes~
I can only imagine.
<3
Amazing and beautiful shots, Cindy. You can really see how individual each one is. I esp. love the blonde-faced one. 🙂
I nicknamed her blondie and she was so beautiful. She had a blonde cub too.
Sweet! She is indeed a beauty.
<3
Beautiful photos! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you more for appreciating the bears!
That’s so cool to be able to get up so close.
That must have been so fascinating to observe!
So different behaviorally than usually portrayed. They were playful and placid. They clearly loved swimming and eating, both of which I can well relate too!
Ditto! 😄
