Greedy Gawpers~

(click/tap to enlarge to details)

Gulp grape jelly,

gobbling a gallon in a week.

They love to guzzle,

and gape,

at the odd creature,

who gives them grape.

They don’t grumble and nicely share,

as long as there’s generous gobs of grape.

Cheers to you from the glorious, glutinous, Holler Acorn Woodpeckers~

  1. Such gorgeous grape-lovers they are! Adore the woodpeckers; we don’t get this pretty black one but downy, hairy, and pileated woodpeckers visit our suet feeders year round and drum on our eavestroughs this time of year. Thanks for sharing your greedy guys!

  2. Beautiful photos of beautiful birds… One spring in Oregon, a woodpecker took a fancy to my metal chimney and regularly made visits – usually early morning – to peck away. Never understood the attraction?

    1. Yes! They do that here too. The loudness of the sound is what they are after. Metal makes more noise than wood. They use this noise to attract mates and deter predators. Just give them grape jelly and they will forget about both!! 😉 😉

  3. Tell me there’s nothing odd about a woman who gives grape jelly to birds. If there is, it’s wonderful. You show, inch by inch, what beauty we live within.

  4. Can you get lost in ‘The Holler’ Cindy? There is so much in there, like a mini Africa. Multitudes of delightful critters and landscapes all around. Thank you for the share kind lady, it is a truly an education, and of course well taken pictures to guide us 🤗😀❤️🙏

    1. You are so welcome Mark and thank you! The Holler has lots of open space and all sorts of wild critters. We are abutting a nature preserve. Few people, lots of critters! 😉

  5. How wonderful you give them grape jelly (How did you know they like grape jelly? Whoever decided one day to even give them grape jelly?)
    Fabulous photos, Cindy.

    1. Woodpeckers are like me. They will eat practically everything! 😉 They are omnivores. They eat seeds, nuts, bugs, but grapes and apples are special treats for them დ

  6. Cindy, I didn’t realize woodpeckers ate grape jelly! And here, I thought they tapped their beaks on tree trunks, looking for bugs. Or is the jelly their dessert?!?
