They are cultivated, originally by the Frazee family. Les Frazee was a friend of mine. Edwin Frazee selectively bred double ranunculus, flowers with more than one layer of petals, by self sowing seeds from aberrant flowers. It it him we owe the present day gorgeous layered paper thin flower. When I was young, I used to fill my car trunk up with ranunculus every spring. Now one must pay for admission to the fields, but I am just glad they are still here~
My almost step son (he would be that if I’d married his father) went camping by you and he said it is FABULOUS out there. So are your pictures! Thank you for a brightened day Cindy. ~~dru~~
Stunning. I can’t think of another word for those gorgeous photographs. So amazing. When you see them, you can’t imagine people fighting or killing each other when there is so much beauty all around them.
I almost never know what I admire most, your pictures or your poetry. In this case I can’t decide, however…. spring cheers to you, from the Carlsbad Ranunculus fields… See, we got our own flowering here too, albeit modest. But how insignificant our daffodils and crocusses may be, it IS spring that’s cheering, from the verges and parks. And I, sun in my face, jacket hanging loose, whistling an ancient waltz from some country that has changed names numerous times in history, I cheer wholeheartedly back.
Oh my! What an incredibly poetic comment. Brought tears to my eyes. I see you, face turned to the sun, jacket falling away, on a park bench, surrounded by crocus and daffodil, the waltz dancing you away
How perfectly lovely. Thank you. I am glad to know you. 🌸🌸
Awesome! You wouldn’t believe you coincidentally timely this is. I’m putting together images to go along with a song for our church’s handbell choir … and these would beautifully work. Permission to use for private use? (… and “No” is ok).
Of course you may have them. I am honored and pleased you asked. I love imagining how you would use them with your church handbell choir. How lovely! 🌸
The fields have 50 acres, although, they are planted in sequence to bloom from March-May. They draw me like a moth to flame every year. I wish you could visit. They also have a stunning, large flower garden, designed by a retired visual arts professor from San Diego State. It is spring beauty sensory overload! You would love it.
Beautiful way to alert us to the coming of spring! Thank you, as I’m often oblivious to the passage of time. Just as with last year, your images of beautiful blooms (and I just love ranunculus) is like a pleasant alarm clock. Today, Nikita and I went outside to see the new leaves on our persimmon tree! 🙂
Thank you for the HOPE you created here Cindy.. such beautiful flowers.. May we all add colour into the breath of Spring within our hearts.. Love and Blessings..
And a Happy St Patrick’s Day to you also.. <3
It remarkable how therapeutic spending time in a garden like this is. Anyone who is feeling low should go spend time here, or in a similar garden bursting with spring flowers. It is good for our psyches, spirits & soul! Happy Friday Brad~ 🌸🌸
NOAA has promised a warmer than normal Spring. So far it is colder than normal not just for Spring but for Winter. It is still very white here. Enjoy your warmer weather.
An “AHHHHHHH” for my eyes….thank you so much for capturing and sharing this incredible beauty. Mother nature is indeed the best florist on the planet 🙂
Este no es mi jardín. Ojala lo fuera! Es una operacion de negocios cerca de mi casa. Tan feliz que disfrutaron y tienen un fin de semana maravilloso mi amiga! 🌼🌼
Well, it certainly isn’t spring here, yet! Nonetheless, I love the post, and your shots are superior. Looks like later Monday Toronto time for the Grizzlies post, but I’ve added a Coyote. Will link to both. 😀

So very beautiful! Our little daffodils (usually the first to bloom) had bloomed early with our unseasonably warm weather. Then they were beaten down by a hailstorm and a week later by freezing rain and snow. It makes me very sad. I know they’ll be back at some point but still…..
Your pictures are so beautiful and cheery! Love it!
Yes, that would make me sad too. I heard the cherry blossoms all froze in DC too, Hopefully them bloom even brighter for you soon Linda. Hugs to you & roses too~ 🌹🌹
Beautiful! Such amazing flowers, it’s like you captured their light bursting from the inside. Have you ever photographed with infrared film? I did a long time ago – and the light emitted from anything that is alive always glows. Such a precious sight! Happy Spring Equinox to you!
Hi Cindy,
I tried to leave a comment earlier and it didn’t work. Your photos are luminous! Have you ever photographed with infrared photography? I did a long time ago and the light from the inside of the live subjects/objects was brilliant. I think you’ve captured that here. Happy Vernal Equinox!

Thank you Graham. Means a lot because I am so impressed with English gardens and flowers. I feel this before I land as I see all the green from the sky!
P.S. Air Traffic Control have asked if you would please use an aircraft in future. Last time, one poor chap spilled his tea which meant a formal inquiry. 😀

It is gorgeous and I visit each year~
OMG, I’m dying here, wishing I was there! <3 🙂
I wish you were too. When I was younger, I used to fill my trunk with ranunculus every spring!
Are they cultivated, who grows them?
