California isn’t all ocean,

sun and surf.

It is also mountains,

snow and ski.

Mammoth Mountain in Mammoth Lakes California averages 400 inches of snow each year.

We have been coming here to ski annually for almost 55 years.

Another storm is arriving this weekend!

Gearing up.

You can see Mono Lake in the distance where we are going tomorrow.

Cheers to you from Mammoth Lakes in February~

400 inches! OMG!
Yes! People often don’t realize this about Cali. While fires burn in SoCal, avalanches are killing people in The Sierras. It is a really unusual and extreme state ᨒ↟
When I lived in San Francisco it was Tahoe and Bear Valley
Yes. ᨒ↟
Saying hello from south of Sydney, Australia. No, we are not meant to have snow here either. Except all the American and European skiers come to our Southern Alps twixt NSW and Victoria to ‘keep up’ when the summer blazes hit you 🙂 ! Lovely photos of your snowy landscapes – no, I didn’t know you had as much! Hope the coming snowstorm is brief and you have a hugely satisfying time . . .
Helloooo to you in my beloved Sydney!! Say hello to all my bestie birdie friends too. I miss them all. I have heard of skiing in Australia and note you mention it is an activity mostly reserved for tourists!! Laughing….. They ski in Maui too. It is said to be the most dangerous ski resort in the world due to all the lava….. Would love to see some pics if you fancy to document this Ozzy touristy tradition. Cheers to you & thank you for the smiles ᨒ↟
Gave you a totally wrong idea – trust me 🙂 ! Yes, we have a lot of guest skiers but most on the slopes ARE ‘natives’ !!! I live 100km S of Sydney . . . promise to tell all the many birdies I I hear you talked about them!
I do. I gossip about the birdies, but they don’t mind, as they gossip about me too. Be well.
Have fun skiing in this beautiful wintry landscape.
Thanks much Tanja & cheers to you! ᨒ↟
Delightful white pictures Cindy. 400 inches…that’s over 11 yards. You wouldn’t find your way out of that one if it all fell at once 🤣 Great post kind lady, enjoy the white stuff 🤗❤️🙏
I took photos of the open door onto our third floor balcony and you have to see them to believe it. I opened the door! The balcony itself is buried above to well above the roofline. If you fell in the snow, you would drown. The snow is still soft 35 feet plus up!! ᨒ↟
Haha, I love that…drowning in snow. That is just amazing Cindy, I’m trying to imagine the sight 🤣
ᨒ↟
I remember driving past the Mt. Shasta ski area and seeing cars parked at the roadside nearly completely covered with snow. So I see that there is more than one ski area in California. It seems to have a bit of everything. BTW, I just love those yellow flowers in your header, Cindy. What kind are they?
Yes! The Sierra are some of the snowiest mountains in the lower 48. Hard to realize with all the droughts and fires, but Cali has a bunch of truly different eco systems. The flowers are rununculus from The Carlsbad Flower Fields in San Diego. Hope all is well with you! ᨒ↟
I wondered if they were rununculus. The many petals made me think they might be, but then I wasn’t sure – I’ve never managed to grow them. Very pretty!
This is thing that makes them one of my favorite flowers. The layers upon layers of fragile silken petals.
Yes, exactly that (plus the intense colour).
ᨒ↟
Beautiful photos, Cindy! 😊 Have fun skiing.
Grazie mille Lynette ᨒ↟
Amazing views. So much of snow fall I can’t even imagine . Glad to visit this places through amazing pictures. Thank you CK . Have a nice day ✨.
Smiling back at you & cheers to you and yours! ᨒ↟
Oh, how lovely, Cindy! Happy skiing!!
Cheers to you Donna & all the best! ᨒ↟
California beauty in the ocean and in the snow covered mountains. Enjoy your ski trip!❄️🎿
Thanks so much & all the best to you! ᨒ↟
Such beautiful photos! 😊
Merci beaucoup mon Ami ᨒ↟
Wow, mountain country. It’s beautiful.
I’ve never skied, but I have a hilarious anecdote about ski boots.
Have you skied in Canada? xx
I have skiied in Canada. Ethereal of course. Would love to hear the anecdote about ski boots which are still torture devices ᨒ↟
Such an adventure..
Beautiful images
Enjoy your journey Cindy
Thanks for sharing 🌷😊
Thank you. Be safe and well my friend ᨒ↟
You also 🌼😍
ᨒ↟
Wow. Beautiful country. I must admit that I do tend to think of the sun and surf when I think of Cali. Until I talk to my son and he tells me about the desert or the mountains. I’m reminded that like most things …. A book is more than its cover. Ha ha.
Yes. So true and the desert is whole other amazing world. Cheers to you Brian ᨒ↟
Lovely shots.
Thank you ᨒ↟
What a wonderful sight. I love snow.
Wow! Skiing there for 55 years sure is a recommendation for the location. 🙂
It has, of course, changed over the years, in terms of business development, big rental condos, shops to serve them. To appreciate the place fully, I come off season, and stay at the highest place on the mountain, where I have been staying forever ᨒ↟
This puts the State in an amazing perspective
I am so happy it did. Cali is much more than fires and famous people. It’s has the serious Mountains! Be well Derrick ᨒ↟
It looks Glorious Cindy, have a Wonderful time. Hugs
Hugs David and be well my friend ᨒ↟

You’re more than welcome, Cindy 💙
ᨒ↟
Yowza! “Mammoth mountain averages 400 inches of snow annually.” May you ski with no accidents and much pleasure…
Smiling. Thank you Will. Live long & prosper my friend ᨒ↟
Lovely snow. Just be careful in the storm. ♥
I will and thank you Ute ᨒ↟
Wow, how beautiful! Amazing photos!
Honored. Thank you very much ᨒ↟
Wow..thats a lot of snow and something I have learnt today I didn’t know California even got snow…Happy sking something I have never done 🙂 x
Yes. Understandable. I hear you. The parts of Cali that get lots of snow don’t get the same amount of press coverage as Hollyweird 😉 😉
😂😂.Hollyweird.. Like it… At least if it doesn’t get the press then hopefully not too many tourists.. 🥴😊
Exactly.
Those mountains (and your photos) are pure works of art!! 😍😍
You are a thoughtful friend Teresa. Thank you sincerely ᨒ↟
Love your pictures of snow, mountains, blue lake in the distance, skiing…
Stay safe, dear Cindy!
So happy you do dear Martha. Take good care my friend ᨒ↟
Wow ! Wonderful 😊
Thanks very much ᨒ↟
amazing, Cindy. and true, I rarely think of the snow and mountains there
We have the oddest amounts of different ecosystems. It makes the state unusual, not even considering the people 😉 😉
and there’s that….)
🙂
Terrific images.
So appreciated. Thank you Dana ᨒ↟
Looks like a great place to ski, Cindy. I like the rather gentle sloped and the scenery is fantastic.
Yes. I love what you loved too. Thank you ᨒ↟
Beautiful views, epic skiing! ⛷️ 👍🏼
Awww. Be well Eliza ᨒ↟
An average of 400 inches of snow per year? Incredible!
I know. I grew up on the ocean at the extreme end of Southern California. I learned the ocean early. Eastern Sierra snow lessons came in later childhood and terrified me, particularly the instensity of driving in a serious Sierra storm ᨒ↟
Looks like BIG FUN Cindy!!!
Big mountains, big snow, big fun! Cheers to you Sue ᨒ↟
I love the Mammoth Mountain area, Cindy! Stunning shots! Hope the skiing was amazing!
More is snow coming! Hope all is well with you Terri ᨒ↟
While I am not a fan of the cold, I am always a fan of your pictures and stories of family life!! Wonderful!! Enjoy the stories, the traditions and the family time together in such a beautiful place. Bundle up.
Love to you Sheila & all your beauties ᨒ↟
Breathtaking, Cindy!
Awww…. Thank you very much ᨒ↟
Wonderful ski area Cindy. We used to do a lot of that in our day.
Leslie
I know you were experts. Love to you Leslie ᨒ↟
My sister-in-law skis there with her family. It looks like a beautiful place
It is. Best to time it when people aren’t here ᨒ↟
What a state of extremes!! I guess Cali is so long that it’s reasonable to expect the northern parts to exhibit different climates than the far south. Enjoy your skiing, Cindy!
Yes, in SoCal we left the fires mayhem, to travel to Mammoth, after it was hit with several stationary weather rivers triggering an avalance that killed caught two ski patrollers, one skiied out, the other perished. Frostian….Fire & Ice ᨒ↟
As always, Cindy, you bring the beauty of the world to my kitchen table. Your photos are quintessentially winter!!!
You, as always make me smile my friend. Thank you ᨒ↟
Cheers, Cindy! Stunning winter landscapes. Have fun and be safe 🙂
Thank you Rosaliene. You stay and well too my friend ᨒ↟
What a beautiful setting for skiing or sitting Cindy! Too bad I never mastered skiing.
Thank you master Cindy! 🙏😋
You’re welcome grasshopper! 😉

Many decades ago I had a friend whose family had a place in Bear Valley, CA. Always loved going up there to hang out.
Yes. I know it. Small. Set in beauty. Away from everyone. My kind of place. Obviously you choose wise friends ᨒ↟
Cali is forever in my heart
Visa versa Annette ᨒ↟
