It’s good,

to be mocked,

by a mockingbird.

They are valiant creatures who keep poisonous snakes from the garden.

Here are just a few examples of their mimicry. They even imitate weed whackers at The Holler!
Cheers to you from The Holler Mockers~

Thank you for this mockingbird spotlight! I enjoyed both your photos and the video. I would love to hear a recording of a mockingbird imitating a weed wacker!
Happy you enjoyed Liz. I am in the process of setting up a new wildlife cam with audio, so maybe I will be able to record it for you 𓅼𓅓𓅮𓅣𓅰
Oh, this is an exciting new venture! A few people in our neighborhood have wildlife cams. Just bears and porcupines so far.
Ooooh…. I love bears and porcupines from a distance!
The bears do like to come around when they’re hungry! We’re seeing more porcupines this year than ususal.
Sounds like Heaven to me.
Beautiful pictures Cindy. I didn’t know they kept venomous snakes away, good reason to love them. Maggie
Thanks much. Mockingbirds are relentless defenders if their nest is threatened. They will even go after larger mammals like raccoons if their nest is in danger 𓅼𓅓𓅮𓅣𓅰
You’ re most welcome, Cindy.
Wonderful pics Cindy.
Grazie mille Sanjo 𓅼𓅓𓅮𓅣𓅰
Fascinating bird!
We are in complete accord Rosaliene 𓅼𓅓𓅮𓅣𓅰
We have a different variety of Mockingbird in the Boston, MA area. I love listening to their songs — which as you know can incorporate a surprising range of sounds (not just other bird calls…) I did NOT know that they will attack snakes and defend their nests/territory passionately. Thank you for yet another terrific blog post, Cindy. Lovely photos AND great comments!
Thank you for your wonderful comment Will. Enjoyed it very much. Mockers are tough little birdies and I love having them nest here. They keep us safe. Take good care my friend 𓅼𓅓𓅮𓅣𓅰
Pretty birds, Cindy. 🙂
Thanks much my friend & hope you are well. Heading over to your blog now to see what’s up. I haven’t seen a post from you in awhile 𓅼𓅓𓅮𓅣𓅰
I love the mockers!!
I hope you and your family had a wonderful 4th. of July – you’re the BEST!!
Visa versa 2UX2! We had a really fun 4th and I can tell you did too. Be well all of you 𓅼𓅓𓅮𓅣𓅰
Well, that was very informative and fun. As you know, I cannot see well enough to see a bird in nature so I get such pleasure from your photos. And the birdsong video was a lot of fun too. Who knew? Thanks so much for this.
Makes me happy to make you happy Marlene. You are a remarkable person. Stay safe & well my friend 𓅼𓅓𓅮𓅣𓅰
To Kill A Mockingbird came to mind. Hope you had a great 4th. Greetings from Northern Michigan.
Yes! Someone just mentioned that wonderful book/movie. Happy 4th Deborah 𓅼𓅓𓅮𓅣𓅰

Sincere thank yous dear Gigi from the birdies and I! 𓅼𓅓𓅮𓅣𓅰
We don’t have mockingbirds in Australia, so all I can think of is Atticus Finch saying “kill all the birds you want but not the mockingbird…” Great photos (as always).
Linda xx
Smiling….. Such a great quote! Thank you for the reminder 𓅼𓅓𓅮𓅣𓅰
Something new & more I didn’t know about Mocking Birds. Love the sonic video. All good, but I paused a moment for the poor snake. For all their ability to threaten, I forget they have adversaries too – many in fact who are more quick and unafraid. Life is not All Easy being a snake (not that I personally have any fondness their way).
I hear you. I love all sorts of snakes. We have a very large red racer that lives near our front door. Red Racers, like King Snakes are non venomous, and will attack and kill rattlesnakes and keep them away. I don’t want rattlesnakes in my garages or near my 5yo grandsons, so I welcome critters that keep them away 𓅼𓅓𓅮𓅣𓅰
Hmmm…. I think I’ve been IDing some birdies wrong. The birds I thought were mocking birds are much darker. Maybe they are a type of blackbird. Or Catbirds which also have that upturned tail! 🙂
Bird identification is not easy. There are 10,000 or so species, so making a mistake is quite easy 𓅼𓅓𓅮𓅣𓅰
I have a chart for local birdies, and a few bird books too. But still small nuances are hard to spot. 🙂
So true. Take good care Jules 𓅼𓅓𓅮𓅣𓅰
One day I approached an area near a reservoir. As I approached it I heard many birds singing. It sounded like there were at least a dozen birds. When I finally arrived at the spot, I only saw one Mockingbird. I looked around the area carefully and verified that there was indeed just one Mockingbird.
Smiling…… Isn’t that amazing! I know just what you mean and I think it is incredible 𓅼𓅓𓅮𓅣𓅰
Hi, Cindy! You have captured the mocking bird at its finest. Such pretty little creatures. 🌺🩷
Much appreciated Kymber. Thank you & take good care 𓅼𓅓𓅮𓅣𓅰
Wow! I’ve always liked mockingbirds, but had no idea they went beyond other bird sounds. Great pic, as always, Cindy!
Happy you enjoyed Mitch & thanks much my friend 𓅼𓅓𓅮𓅣𓅰
Wonderful photos, Cindy. Mockingbirds are the most amazing mimics, they have convinced me many times that I was listening to any number of birds during their performance.
Thank you Tanja. How fun and amazing is that! Enjoy & cheers 𓅼𓅓𓅮𓅣𓅰
Fun and amazing indeed!

Love this 💞
So happy you do & thank you Val 𓅼𓅓𓅮𓅣𓅰
Wonderful! We have living locally – an introduced species – an Indian Myna – that imitates our landline telephone ring. I don’t know how many times I’ve rushed to the phone!
OMG! That is so wonderful. There was a english speaking Myna in the pet store I visited constantly when I was a kid. His conversations were way above my head. Stay safe and well Bruce 𓅼𓅓𓅮𓅣𓅰

Thank you very much! 𓅼𓅓𓅮𓅣𓅰
Would love to see a Mocking Bird 🐦 “in the flesh” so to speak, they serve a great purpose if they keep the snakes in check!
They are wonderfully entertaining and helpful birdies. I hope you do see one & cheers to you my friend 𓅼𓅓𓅮𓅣𓅰
I wonder when they will get good at copying people.

I once walked toward a parking area near a dam and heard all kinds of birds singing. I was hoping to see a who bunch of them, but when I arrived at the scene there was just one mockingbird. He was going through a whole repertoire of bird songs at full throttle.
That is so wonderful! I have experienced this too. They are delightful 𓅼𓅓𓅮𓅣𓅰
Beautiful photos of mockingbirds! Thank you for the link, it so interesting!
So pleased you enjoyed & thanks very much 𓅼𓅓𓅮𓅣𓅰
How interesting to see pictures of a mockingbird. When reading the word mockingbird a memory of an old song started to play in my head. Hanne Boel from Denmark with Mockingbird:
I love it! I had never heard this version. Carly Simon and James Taylor did a version of, but I think Inez and Charlie Foxx were the original artists:
