Despite Death Valley National Park in California holding the record for being the hottest place on earth at 134F, it also has an ancient lake named Lake Manly that appears rarely after excessive and prolonged rainfall.

The rains caused by 2023’s El Nino event formed the lake last year. The continuation of El Nino rains into 2024 have enabled it to remain and grow, a very rare phenomona. Usually rainfall evaporates in the dessicated desert long before it has a chance to collect.

Here is the lake in March of 2024, with snowy summits,

and salty shores.

Rain is continuing to fall in the desert which is remarkable.

The lake is much, much larger than I expected, approximately 6 miles long and 3 miles wide in places.

Lake Manly is a remnant of an ancient ocean,

and is four x’s saltier than seawater.

It lies in Badwater Basin,

the lowest point in North America at 282 feet below sea level.

Maybe the lake will last until next year which would truly be extraordinary.
Cheers to you from lovely Lake Manly~

Cindy, I’d never heard of this, and I find it truly remarkable. What an amazing thing Nature is! I, too, hope your lake hangs around longer.
It is raining in the desert today. Quite cold, and snowing on the mountains. Weird!
fantastic

Smiling…. Thank you Graham!
It doesn’t look very deep, but I bet you could float in that.

If you walked out further I think it would be deeper. People were kayaking on it until they forbade it. And it is continuing to rain and snow. Weird.
How extraordinary!
Yes. My thoughts exactly.
amazing as always, Cindy.
Thank you Pam.
This invisible lake may indeed be visible for some additional time, Cindy. The wonders of nature. I had not heard of this area until now. A great re-discovery!
It just dumped a bunch more snow on the desert mountains, and is raining in the deserst lowlands, with more on the horizon. Weird but wonderful!
Stunning photography, Cindy.
Thank you Rebecca and be well my dear friend.
Lake Manly: Extraordinary, indeed, Cindy! Who knows what other surprises await us with our chaotic climate changes. Thanks for sharing the beautiful photos 🙂
Thanks for appreciating them Rosaliene & be well my friend.

Beautiful captures. We visited Death Valley last January. How wild to see so much water in Badwater Basin.
Yes. Uncanny. I wonder if it will stay until next year. It just snowed a lot more on the mountains and rained in the desert.
Just beautiful, Cindy!! Sending all good things 🙂
Flying back to you Lorrie.
Amazing. I would never have thought it possible… Thanks for the trip Cindy
So happy you joined me my friend. You made it better.
You’re only too kind Cindy. Much obliged.

Oh, I wish I could see it. The last time I was in Death Valley, many years ago now, it was July and 118 degrees. Such a fascinating place. Thanks for sharing the lake.
I like the desert in all seasons, but those temps are hard to tolerate for long დ
This is pretty awe inspiring. It looks as though it’s possible to wade completely across if one was so inclined. Does it attract any particular bird life?
Interesting….I saw no birds, possibly because the lake is new. I wonder if you could wade across it. I know people were kayaking on it, but that has been stopped because they were leaving footprints on the salt flats that might become permanent after the lake dries
großartige Aufnahmen.
Vielen danke ღ
Breathtaking scenes, Cindy!
Grazie mille Amy ღ
You have plenty of space over there…
Yep. It’s perfect now. Actually kinda cold and no one here except roadrunners and burros. Heaven ღღ
Beautiful photos, Cindy! 😊
Much appreciated Tina. Thank you! ღ
My pleasure. 😊
We have had more than out fair share of rain since the start of summer. It looks like Death Valley has as well.
It continues to rain and snow in both California and Nevada. All the mountains are covered in snow. The road up to Wrighwood is closed and more rain/snow/thunderstorms set for the weekend. We’re going skiing in April! ! ღ
I bet the ski centers are happy! They have an extended season. I know Tahoe are can get a lot of snow.
Yes! I think we’re going skiing after all the spring breaks end.
Less people makes for better conditions sometimes.
Wow! What a beautiful combination between hot weather down, and snowing mountains up! 🤩
Truly amazing nature at its finest. <3
We live in a beautiful world. Take good care my friend დ
Hugs <3
So beautiful!

Thank you very much Bernie. Your thoughtful comments are most appreciated დ
