Australian King Parrot~

Even the females are kings!

Female Kings have green heads and red bodies.

Males are the only Australian parrot with a completely red head.

Although king parrots appear red and green to us,

birds have an extra cone in their eyes that enable them to see ultraviolet wavelengths.

Under ultraviolet light, some of the King Parrots wing feathers glow with golden light, like a crown.

King Parrots mate for life and often are seen in pairs like these two.

Cheers to you from the beautiful Aussie kings~

  1. They are a beautiful bird Cindy, I’ve had many come from the hills and mountains and flying near me on the coast because of the drought. It is great to see them as it is not a regular occurrence at all 😀 ❤️ 🙏🏽 🦜 🦋 🦘 🐬 🐳 🌺 🌹 🌈

  2. They’re beautiful!

I lived in Pasadena – city of the wild parrots of unknown origin 😄 – and I have no idea of the species of parrots there, but many were red and blue. 😊

    1. We have Amazon parrots in San Diego too! Some species of parrots are doing better in the urban areas they escaped into, then they are in the wild, which is a sad fact, but I am glad they are thriving somewhere. 🦜

  3. Love this colourful parrot which I’ve seen in the aviaries at Dunedin Botanic Garden, NZ. Great photos and I’ve shared a link on Twitter. Thanks!

    1. Wild parrots stare intently at you when you are still, quiet and watching them. I have photos of them turning their heads upside down as if to figure out what I am up too. It cracks me up. They people watch!

They are beautiful! I wish I had their eyesight. 😊 and an opportunity to see them like you are able to do that Cindy.

    1. The Amazon has amazingly colorful birds too. Australia’s fauna is unique though to itself though, much of it found only on the continent. I can get closer to wild parrots in Australia than anywhere else I have been in the world, including the Amazon.

    1. They are 17 inches long. There are lots of different types of crows, so it depends. American crows can be up to 17.5 inches in length, so they are about the same size as an American crow.

  6. Their feathers already vibrant, adding another spectrum light would be something even more amazing I would imagine. Bird males seem to have more colorful than female ones.

  7. Conspicuous in their flamboyance, they make a very striking couple Cindy. Such panache! 😀

For some quirky reason I’m reminded of ‘his’ and ‘hers’ towels in a newly-wed’s first home 😀

    Have a wonderful week,

    Take care 🙏

    1. Well, they are a color coordinated, matching set….. Mother Nature was feeling especially artistic with the parrot species. They look just like something designed by the world’s most talented designer. Be well my friend 🦜

    1. They are actually quiet parrots, compared to other parrots and certainly compared to cockatoos who like to shriek. They are shy, quiet, sweet parrots. 🦜

  8. These parrots are so gorgeous! When I was in Kauai recently, I was reacquainted with the thousands of green-coated parakeets who live in the South end of the island. They roost at night in palm trees near resorts and make a heck of a noise as they “return to the roost.’

  9. These birds are beautiful and the colors are so unique. They are love birds. Thank you for sharing these pictures, Cindy. I look forward to them.

“birds have an extra cone in their eyes that enable them to see ultraviolet wavelengths.”

    How groovy is that!!!

    1. Yah, how amazing is that? Birds are already the most colorful creatures on the planet, according to our eyes, and they see more color spectrum than us? How groovy is that? <3 🦜

  11. Stunning colors! The red headed male is gorgeous. Thank you for sharing these images while you are traveling. 💖🦜💗

  12. Beautiful. I wonder if that extra cone makes the male parrot look as if he has a halo!
Last year I saw an Indigo Bunting for the first time. They only fly through our area.

Though our nights are still chilly spring is on the way! And with Daylight Savings we have more daylight! Cheers, Jules

  13. I love seeing Australian King Parrots — they’re so bright and colorful, easy to identify and big birds. Your photos here are excellent, and I really liked hearing that they see each other in golden light. So royal.
