Meet the Australian Water Lizard. They like to climb trees and drop down on rivers and lakes to hunt. They can remain submerged for up to 90 minutes. Males can reach up to 3 feet in length.
“Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore….”

How adorable is this Noisy Miner chick?

Masked Lapwings are one of the reasons I so love birds.

Who else but a bird could have a face like this?

There is the Australian White Ibis,

the gregarious Australian Magpie,

always assertive Silver Gull,

and shy and lovely Australian Wood Duck.

We are on the move now, exploring new places, so please excuse me when I am less present than I wish I could be.
Cheers to you from magical Oz~

You are more than welcome Frank. Thanks for coming along.
Wow…the images are wonderful…thanks for sharing ♥️😊🙏
Thank you more for appreciating them <3
Welcome
I love your birds! I spent all day today with the most amazing kookaburra…..He has to be the cutest bird in the world.
Haha I love the title! And brilliant picture!
Thanks so much & I am glad you enjoyed! Cheers~
magpie, my new cutie about the size of our crows?
Yes, and I love magpies too. Such gregarious birds and if you are nice to them, they bring you gifts! I love them <3
These pictures look like they were taken in cities. The birds must get really used to people. Food source? Anyway, beautiful pics, beautiful nature. Thanks.
We have been in OZ for two days in Sydney and all of these photos were taken during this period, so good perception on your end. Amazing how much wildlife is in Sydney. We head off tomorrow to explore further.
Beautiful lizard and birds.
Very happy you enjoyed & cheers to you <3
Surely one of the top five blog post titles ever, Cindy! Bravo. And your photos are excellent as usual. Best, Babsje
Awwww, thanks very much & so appreciated! Cheers to you <3
😎
Great shots, Cindy, and a wonderful pun in the title!
Have a great Sunday,
Pit
You too my friend & thank you!

Your Silver Gull friend expresses my oft times feelings!!!

Oz is indeed magical largely thanks to its flora and fauna
Agreed. Very special <3
Beautiful captures, Cindy!
Grazie mille Donna <3

Pictures of some of the marvelous birds from Oz by Cindy Knoke.
Hugs & gratitude flying to you Patricia from Down Under <3
Maybe I misunderstand them totally… but I do love the expression in their faces and their stances 😀
Nah, not wrong, animal expressions, like art, are open to interpretation!
😀
Definitely over the rainbow. Is it a good lizard or a bad lizard?
Laughing…..Perfect!!! Definitely a good lizard <3
Very fun! Were you affected by the fires during your time there? So many animals died😭.
We have only been here two nights now and are still in Sydney. I hear the fires are still bad in certain places like Canberra. We are heading out to explore more tomorrow so I will learn and share more as I travel. Thank you for your concern.
Every single photo is truly beautiful. What a wonderful gift you give to all of us. Have fun as you travel and you’re new picture shows us how beautiful you are. <3
I am blessed by beautiful friends like you Gigi. Be well kind friend <3

Thank you Gigi on behalf of all the amazing critters in Oz!
Wonderful! An entertaining and wholly absorbing array today Cindy. You’ve become quite the birder 😀
Whilst all bird types hold special appeal, I’m naturally drawn, like a moth to the Moon, to the White Ibis.
Enjoy your travels down under.
DN
You should come Down Under Dewin. There are so many of them here. They seem almost tame. I love them too!
Dewin Down Under! Great title for a poem lol 😀
Would it were possible to escape these wintering shores for a holiday in the antipodes, I’d be there like a shot: camera in hand, pen at the ready, happily twitching in warming sunshine! But alas! ‘Tis another destination destined for the to-do list…and any immediate sense of contentment found bound within my enjoyment of your expressive photographs. Thank you for airing and sharing them here.
Happy walkabout Cindy!
DN
I am most happy you are joining me for the walkabout Dewin. Tomorrow we head to Victoria and I am glad you are coming along….
And I shall look forward to it Cindy 😀 No doubt we’ll catch up for coffee on the inter-island passenger ferry heading for Phillip Island. If you’re buying i’ll have a quad long shot grande in a venti cup half calf double cupped no sleeve salted caramel mocha latte with 2 pumps of vanilla substitute 2 pumps of white chocolate mocha for mocha and substitute 2 pumps of hazelnut for toffee nut half whole milk and half breve with no whipped cream extra hot extra foam extra caramel drizzle extra salt add a scoop of vanilla bean powder with light ice well stirred, thank you 😀
Have a ball! Don’t forget your camera!

P.S: Great track by the Kinks 😀
<3
Laughing….will do!
All your great animal portraits have various human expressions. Excellent job, Cindy!
So happy you see their expressions. I never fail to be amazed at how curious they are about us. They love to people watch!
The lizard looked to have been posing and the birds! I love their expressions.
The lizard was definitely a poser!!! 🙂
These are beautiful portraits, Cindy!
You are very kind and most appreciated Lavinia <3
One of these days, I will get to Australia and see these birds. That gull looks like he is ready fight like our domestic geese here in the states.
Yep, head down, furious glare, very clear intent! Cracks me up every time.
Great photos. The water lizard is adorable. It looks like you founds some raucous birds.
The lizards were actually quite interested and friendly. I would shake feet with them though 🙂
I love your take on the world, Cindy. So positive 🙂
Thank you Melissa. The positive side of things in this world are too often overlooked <3
Beautiful photos, Cindy. Enjoy your travels – can’t wait to see the pics! 🙂
Thanks for traveling with me Eliza, you make the experience better!
🙂 xo
I likes the look of “Toto”. He looks like he has a strong curious look at something.
He has the wise look of a clever dragon!
Great photos 💕
Merci beaucoup Saania <3
De rien✨
<3
The most amazing animals are found in Oz! I love those birds.
Oz is a magical place <3
Beautiful post Cindy and all the animals look so good 😀
They are thriving here in Sydney and there just has been a second rain in as many weeks!
Fabulous birds, and would love to hold that lizard! (unless poisonous)
He would be a great big hug. He was well over 2 feet long!
Wouldn’t bother me. Have pictures of me with pythons here!

You have to be in Australia Cindy. How are they managing with all the forest fires?
Leslie
It is nice and raining in Sydney today, but I hear another big bush fire just started in Canberra, so it is not over yet unfortunately.
Yes, I heard on the news that Canberra was being threatened by fire. You must be able to see the orange of the fire in the sky. I’ve heard that it can be seen in New Zealand. Take care.
Leslie xoxo
We’ve been having intermittent rain in Sydney so the skies are clear. We head closer soon, so that will probably change.
Do be careful Cindy, but take lots of photos please.
Leslie xoxo
Thanks much my friend <3
xoxo
What superior sharp shots – can almost feel the texture
Awww, makes me glad! Thanks so much Diana.
Great photos. 🙂 Have a safe trip. I understand that the fires are still bad in some locations.
Yes. We met The Governor at Governor’s House in Sydney yesterday and she said the fires are worse now in Canberra, although it it raining and nice now in Sydney.
I love these bird pictures, but the lizard is beautiful!
Friendly too. A group came over to check me out and they are said to be very shy!
I’m surprised that the Noisy Miner hasn’t inspired a TV cartoon series. It’s got the looks!
I love them. When tame, they are great talkers!
Beautiful photographs Cindy…amazing beauty in the subject and in the photo! Great post!
So happy you enjoyed Francisco & cheers to you from Oz!
Loved it! All the best,
Cheers!
Francisco
Cheers & be well Francisco!
Really fabulous photos, as always!
Grazie mille <3
Absolutely amazing, Cindy! Happy travels. x
Thank you and hugs & cheers back to you!
How is it down there? We are scheduled for a May visit to NZ/AUS, lord willing and the fires and viruses don’t rise.
We are still in Sydney where all seems well and it is raining, but we toured the Governor’s Mansion yesterday and the Governor stopped to chat. She said the fires were worse up near Canberra due to a helicopter accidentally setting some brush on fire. I am sure by May things will be much improved.
Thank you.
<3
As a lover of Birds you found some new of them and show us their beauty. Thank you! They are amazing! How is Australia doing after the fire disaster?
Thank you Alexander, you and I share this love for our winged friends. It is raining today in Sydney which is welcome, but we toured the Governor’s Mansion yesterday and The Governor stopped to chat. She said the fires were worse up near Canberra due to a helicopter accidentally setting some brush on fire.
When on the trip you still spend a lot of time for answering to all the comments. Do you sleep at all? 🙂
You really regret you do not live in Australia, don’t you? I’ve been to Australia (Sidney) in 1995 by their winter. The temperature was +25C. I doubt I would like to stay there by their summer. I love seasons but their seasons are absolutely different of what I love.
Have a nice trip and stay safe.
You know me! Laughing….. Yes! I would love to live here. I would be amazing content enticing the bird life to my garden.
🙂
A wonderful way to begin my Sunday! Hugs!
Hugs to you Rebecca from down under <3
Are you in Australia, Cindy? How are the animals coping with the smoke? Such a sad situation.
We toured the Governor’s Mansion yesterday and The Governor stopped to chat. She said the fires were worse up near Canberra due to a helicopter accidentally setting some brush on fire. It is raining now in NSW around Sydney so this is great news for this area.
These birds all have personality to spare!!
They certainly do and they are curious about us too!🐤
🙂
I had a couple of American students stay at my home here in Australia many years ago and the one thing they kept mentioning was that there were so many birds, they said the place was alive. Mind you, I do live in the country which is a little bit more wild than the cities.
Enjoy your trip Cindy, may you have a beautiful stay 😀 ❤️ 🙏🏽 🦋 🦘 🐬 🐳 🌺
This is our second trip down under and one of the major draws back were the birds! All the photos taken in this post were from just two days in Sydney. We are heading out tomorrow to see much more of beautiful Oz!
Then I hope it is a wonderful stay Cindy, and the temperature is a little cooler so you can enjoy whatever is on offer in your travels 😀 ❤️ 🙏🏽 🦋 🦘 🐬 🐳 🌺
Today actually rained which was lovely <3
Beautiful photos of our iconic birds Cindy. Call in for a cuppa if you pass through the Gold Coast. Enjoy your stay here
I would love to do this! Our plans have us heading towards Victoria, but they may change and if they do, I will contact you. Thank you for your hospitality Pauline, much appreciated & hope all is well with Jack <3
All is well with us. Enjoy your travels and contact us 0447744716 if you get this way. How long are you over here?
Cindy, as always, your photographs are simply stunning and beautiful!
Awwww, cheers & thanks to you from Oz!
I don’t have to even ask where you are now, Cindy. I hope you are enjoying all our birdlife. Great shot of the Masked Lapwings. They are such an interesting bird with what appears to be an artificial mask on their heads.
Hope you are able to visit all the places you’d planned, but I know you will be careful as our Bushfire season has a couple more months to go.
Keep safe 🙂
So much beauty — and variety — in our world. I’ve often thought God must have such great fun creating all these colors and species! And Cindy, thank you for bringing them up close so we can all enjoy them.
I’m packing my bags and heading your way, just as soon as the barbie cools to coals…
“The Lizard of Oz” – ha ha ha! These birds make me smile! 🙂

Your comment made me smile <3
Wow! What a collection of fascinating creatures, beautifully captured by you. I love them all.
I love you for loving them <3
Anytime you are present is a very good time, Cindy. These birds are stunning, and you capture far more than feathers. Thank you!
It is people like you that make blogging the rewarding experience that it is. Thank you Jennie & be well my friend <3
That is so nice, Cindy. Thank you, my friend. 😍
(。♥‿♥。)
What a gorgeous gluttony of bird pics! I adore this, Cindy.
You should have seen today. Day 3 Oz. I made personal friends with a kookaburra. He followed me all over the Botanical Gardens. He is hands down the cutest and calmest bird I have ever seen. This is only day 3 and I haven’t even left Sydney. Why don’t I live here. This is bird centrale.
What fun! Do you see anything of the fires?
Not yet. We head closer the day after tomorrow.
I have never seen a masked lapwing before – I just love the yellow! Are some of these animals what they call “invasive species”?
We need an Australian to weigh in here as I am not an expert on Australian birds. I think these are all native Ozzie birds. They are all in my very heavy Australian Bird book that I am toting along with me, and I am glad I am because I am using it multiple times a day. I cannot believe the sightings today and it is only day 3 in Oz and I haven’t even left Sydney.
From what I understand the Miner bird above is a natural but there is an introduced Indian Myna bird that is very similar but is a dark brown where the above bird is grey. It is causing untold damage pushing out native birds from their habitats etc. All the rest are native. Wait till you get among the parrots Cindy. Or there are many Australian animals at Taronga Zoo across the harbour by ferry or drive over the ‘coathanger’ bridge to the north side to see it 😀 ❤️ 🙏🏽 🦋 🦘 🐬 🐳 🌺
I am so eager to see all the parrots. I spent yesterday, almost all day, with a Kookaburra who followed me from place to place in the Botanical Gardens. I fell in love and now think kookaburras are the cutest bird I have ever seen with personalities to match. I really should live here. I would be so happy living among such amazing birds. <3
Ah, I didn’t realise that you were on a different continent!! lol!!
I need to use my Australian bird book just to identify many of these amazing exotic birds! I spent all day yesterday with a very friendly kookaburra. Heaven!
Yes, from what I hear Australia is jammed packed with beautiful wildlife and your beautiful photos certainly support that.
All true!
Im-peck-able shots as always, my dear friend! ❤◦°˚\(*❛‿❛)/˚°◦❤
Thanks sweetie (。♥‿♥。)
Beeeeuteeeful birds…and I love the lizard of oz!
He was a very friendly chap! Cheers to you Dor <3
Gorgeous photos Cindy. I really like the lizard who can stay underwater for an hour! Happy travels…
He can, but he is obviously a magical dragon.
Indeed. 🙂
<3
Love the lizard. Australia has such a variety of them. Birds are awesome in Australia too. Flocks of wild cockatoos, colorful lorikeets, and pink galahs just to name a few. My daughter who lives there says they call the ibis bin chickens so they must like getting into the garbage.
I envy your daughter living here and you because you get to visit her!
🎵We’re off to see the lizard, the wonderful lizard of Oz…🎵
Laughing……
Wonderful pictures, the masked Lapwing wow. xxx
So happy you enjoyed & yes indeed, the lapwing is a most unusual birdie!
Wonderful shots as always, Cindy!
Very kind & much appreciated!
The Noisy Miner chick won my heart, Cindy, and made me smile. I am always amazed at how well you capture and humanize the expressions of birds! –Curt
Awwww, so appreciated Curt <3
Amazing capture Cindy.❤
(。♥‿♥。)
Your photography takes my breath away. Wow, what magnificent creatures these are!
Honored. Thank you very much!
#3 – such an excellent bird, such a great shot of it. Oh, and a post title after my own heart, Cindy
Smiling. Thanks so much & cheers!
You capture such emotion with your lens…Every photo is an interaction that leaves me feeling great. As for that Water Lizard,,,he is one proud dude, and rightfully so.
He does has that ‘lizard king’ vibe doesn’t he!
I would not want to come face to face with that lizard. The pictures are great as usual.
He was actually kinda shy & friendly…… 🙂
I will take your word for it. 🙂❤
Trust yourself <3 Love to you.
Beautiful shots you got here.
You are a good person. Thank you.
Thank you for the kind words Cindy. You are most welcome.
(。♥‿♥。)
Lovely picture
Thank you.
Great to see your enjoying your visit to our beautiful yet diverse country Cindy, agree that our Kookaburra is quite an unusual bird.
They are awesome and I am seeing them daily now and loving every second in their company.
Cindy, these are lovely photographs!
Grazie mille Charles!
Wonderful creatures. I think my favorite–for the name alone–is the noisy miner.
I love miners and myna birds. When I was a child there one that could talk up a storm in our local pet store.
I love the title of your post, but more than that, I love that Noisy Miner chick. I’d never seen (or heard of) them before, so I’ve just spent some happy moments on YouTube watching videos of them. I can see (hear) why they’re called Noisy Miners! But what cute birds. 🙂
I used to follow your blog from an older one of mine (I forget which, I’ve had many) and now I’m back again. Off I go to click the Follow button.
Welcome back!!! Lovely to hear from you and happy you enjoyed the miner. They are adorable and humorous birds <3
Thank you!
♡´・ᴗ・`♡
Remarkable gallery, Cindy! The Magpie is really, really cool!
And there are all these different kinds of magpies, including a dainty one, called a lark magpie, and a more raven looking one. I am surprised to see that all the corvids yield to the parrots, even when they outnumber them.
What great birds! I recognize some of them!
Aren’t they impressive creatures! Happy you recognize some. I have my ponderous Australian Bird Guide to help me out with the tougher ones!
We stayed at a rented house outside of Brisbane. I’ll never forget waking up at 5 am and just listening to those exotic bird calls.
The Masked Lapwings are certainly beautiful and unusual-looking Cindy, but so are all the other birds here. The Wizard of Oz line is extra apt for that 🙂
All I need are some ruby slippers….. ( ˊᵕˋ )♡
What a great title to go w/mr lizard, Cindy! Fun pics! 😊
Happy you enjoyed & cheers for the weekend Felipe!
You too, Cindy! All I thought it was Saturday ‘cause we had the youngest grandchild over last night, but the weekend is still to come, yay! Thanks, Cindy – still smiling every time I see Lizard of Oz 😊
Your comments make me smile ♡´・ᴗ・`♡
☺️
I will probably never travel to Australia; so I am savoring these beautiful photographic glimpses via your eyes/lens/heart. Who knew that a lizard could stay underwater for that long! And the feathers + coloring on the birds you have photographed are awe-inspiring…
You are a kind friend. Thank you. I so many amazing creatures including an egg laying mammal called an echidna and huge fruit bats hanging on trees upside down. They are black with orange fur. And of course there are kangaroos in your backyard and parrots in your trees. I love Oz! Cheers to you my friend~
Way to much cute is happening here!! Now I must research the Australian water lizard – how cool is that beautiful being?!
They were so wonderful. I loved the way we stood at an impasse staring at each other. Plus the things they can do are incredibly awesome (◍•ڡ•◍)❤
