Dear~

I found Bambi grazing on a lawn in Washington state!

He was surrounded by very watchful adults.

The adults were a bit wary of humans,

but Bambi was pure curiosity!

This adult had a massive yet cleanly healed scar that transversed her right side and formed a y flap crossing over her shoulder. This was a major injury that cut through lots of muscle. I wonder if a good samaritan veterinarian stitched her up?

Cheers to you from the peaceful, and very dear-deer~

  1. What I remember most about my trips to Washington state were the cherry blossoms, waterfalls and deer — and everything was so lush and green. The baby deer were very curious, but the parents were very cautious. Brings back memories.

    1. Oh, lucky you! I love them too, but they are not common at all where I live because the coyote packs scare them away. We are heading to Manitoba soon and I hope to see more of them.

  3. When we lived in the country and had 75 acres full of wildlife and fish, watching the deer was a favorite thing to do. I have tons of pictures – it was fun to see the does, bucks and fawns all getting along, at least most of the year 🙂

  4. Aren’t they lovely?
Unfortunately, we found a dead fawn [very likely hit by a car] on our property last night. I did not bury it, though, but just took it out of our sight and left it there in the open, hoping that our vultures will take care of it.

  5. It looks like the deer feel right at home around your yard. As sweet as they are, they can be quite a nuisance when they get into your garden. Have a great day, Cindy!

    1. This is an older fawn, who has lost his spots. Those newborn vulnerable fawn who still have their spots….They are so precious.
It seems impossible to me, to not love all of them.

    1. Laughing…..
I know! I spend so much time gardening and growing things. And I watch so many critters consume so much of what I grow here at The Holler. I shop at the grocery store. They shop at The Holler. Laughing….more.
It’s all good. Imagine if they weren’t here. They bug me sometimes, but it would be so much worse if someone killed them because they belong here.

    1. Oh yes, sooo adorable! I would love to see this. Sometimes mama leaves them sleeping quietly away from her, so she can graze and keep them safe. They are beautiful creatures.

  6. Dear Cindy,
It does seem Bambi has released itself from being imprisoned in a book, it wants to know first hand why we all love her so much. I guess the mystery is solved now, it’s time for it to go to the comforts of the pages of the book and delight generations of sweet little kids forever! 🙂

    1. Awww, my sweet friend, you just made my <3 smile! She is surprised we love her, but every child who ever read about her does, and at least in the pages of the book, she is safe forever. Love to you <3

  7. I love the level of detail you were able to get with your photos! Deer are regular visitors at my place. I refer to them as DWA (Deer with Attitude). They just look up from eating the hostas and stare us down: Yeah, I’m eating your hostas. You wanna make sumthin’ of it? Ah well, they were here first.

    1. Laughing, a lot….I watched them eating someone’s vegetable garden. I specifically said, quite clearly, several times, “You are not supposed to do that!” It had the exact effect you would imagine. They are funny creatures. They seemed more nervous when I silently took their photos, then when I told them to stop eating the veggies. So here’s what I’m thinking. When you next see them eating your hostas, creep oh so slowly, and oh so stilly, and just stand there, perfectly still, preferably with a camera, looking at them intently. I think it will unnerve them, and at least slow down the hosta consumption….a bit.

  8. Beautiful … I love these pics … see, human and animal can co-exist … just need to take the guns out of man’s hands. Thank you for sharing these gorgeous pics!

      1. It really is, our first ‘visitors’ when we moved in were a few deer who startled the jeebers out of me when I was unloading groceries my first night there. I think they were hoping to be invited in for dinner!

        1. Laughing…..Just watch out for the peaceful grazers in rutting season…. Elk are incredible and dangerous during rut, but then so are elephants…I have gotten in the midst of both. You just definitely want to avoid being in between a male and the object of their affection…. Laughing more~

  9. Aw, the poor dear! I wonder if she tangled with an auto or a wild critter? We’re all glad you had a camera with you to capture these beautiful animals, Cindy!

  10. Living in the woods, with plenty of white-tail deer, I just see our dallies and purple coneflowers getting dead-headed each morning by the local deer grazing along the driveway. – Oscar

  11. Great shots! Interesting to see how different your deer are from ours in Texas – yours have much thicker coats and coloring is different. At least Bambi’s mom recovered from her injury.

      1. Thanks, Cindy! You are so incredibly cool! If it were not for you, and your consistent feedback to my posts, I probably would not be still posting. Bless you for your encouragement and for inspiring everyone you touch with your beautiful photography and inspirations. Namaste.

        1. Oh, I would miss you and your posts terribly if you stopped blogging! You are doing such important work with your blog. Please do not stop! Hugs & all the best to you <3 <3

  12. A most enjoyable visit with the dear deer, Cindy. I’ve never seen a deer with a scar, how fortunate for the deer to have been taken care of. Great photos and a joy to be here.

  13. Aren’t they beautiful? When we lived in the country, I’d see them all the time. Yet every single time was like opening a gift. Always gasps and smiles and if I wasn’t on the way to work, I could sit and watch them for a while. Besides that scar, they look healthy too. What a blessing have them be part of your day. x K

  14. Reblogged this on Mitch Teemley and commented:
My Featured Blogger this week is Cindy Knoke, a former psychotherapist who packed everything up and moved to a rural (think “wild”) location she calls “The Holler.”

Cindy now traipses local and foreign vistas, taking spectacular photos of better adapted creatures than many of her former clients, as well as images of breathtaking vistas and charming towns. She regularly posts these online, along with her reveries and thoughtful insights. (There is quite a collection of her work at National Geographic’s Your Shot site, as well.)

I’m hardly the first person to recommend Cindy (she has a BIG following), but I gladly add my voice to the list!

    1. Such a thoughtful, kind and wonderful gift from you Mitch. I am deeply touched. I have already met some of your friends who have stopped over to say Hello. You, are they, are a blessing to me. Thank you my friend & be well <3

    1. So incredible of Mitch to do this! I am truly touched by his kindness, and yours for stopping by and sharing such thoughtful comments with you. Bless you & Bless Mitch <3

  15. On this humid bustling day, these pictures still the world.
It is a joy to find your blog. My thanks to Mr. Teemley for
the lead and to you for sharing the living of your dream.

  17. Such perfect photos of a moment of peace and tranquility. It does hurt my heart to know they are in danger every moment. I hope whoever patched that sweet fellow up knows how much it was appreciated. I saw deer wandering yards in Boulder, CO several years ago. They almost looked like statues resting on the lawns. Thanks for sharing this lovely family moment.

    1. I know how you feel. <3
There are so many kind people doing good stuff everyday, like the veterinarian or tech, who saved this deer.
I think the media needs to balance horribleness with beauty, otherwise we will all be frozen by helplessness.

      1. I agree. I don’t watch the news much anymore. I will record it and watch in fast forward with the sound off till I get to something good or relevant. There are lots of people doing good but they don’t make the news. Balance ‘is’ the keyword as you said.
