Rarotonga is the island of happy dogs. No matter what you do, a dog will come with you.
They wait at your door for you to come out.
Swimming?
If you swim, they will come along!
They swim to distant reefs with our son everyday.
Fishing?
Heck yes!
They are master fisherdogs and,
they bring their catch to you!
Hiking? Their paw prints mark your path.

Dogs are really amazing animals. They are both sociable and make one become active. Unfortunately, I had to give away my dog when I moved to Kristianstad many years ago, I was away from home for a long time every day.

Wow. Incredible. Does everybody pitch in to clean up dog poop? One of my favorite music albums is Bill Frisell’s “Good Dog–Happy Man.” I can’t think of anything better than a happy dog. Great post!
I only saw dog-poop once which is pretty unbelievable isn’t it, since I saw dogs everywhere. I also never saw anyone cleaning it up. These dogs were just universally well behaved and friendly. 🐶<3

Amazing! where do all these dogs come from? Do they belong to someone?
Some belong to people and others are communal. There is an active SPCA in Raro that spays and neuters and provides care.
I think it would totally break my heart to leave there… 🙂
Yes!!! There is everything you need to live here, fish in the sea, coconuts and fruit growing wild, chickens roaming free. I understand why the European explorers often wanted to stay in Polynesia.
Though I’m quite happy with what this life gave me, can I please start my life over in a few years? 😀
It would be so cool to be able do this, wouldn’t It? I want to start my life over too, sort of……as long as nothing worse happened in my second chance.

This was a very interesting post. So many of yours have me doing a bit of research to see exactly where you are in proximity to everywhere else. I couldn’t even imagine a trip like that so this has been especially fun. Do the dogs belong to anyone and cared for? They seem happy enough so I assume so. What a delight that must have been for all of you. Thanks for sharing this.
The dog question is complicated, so I kinda hoped to avoid it. Which I still hope to do. The SPCA has a prominent presence in Raro, they spay and neuter, they help the dogs they select to live.
There are a lot of areas like that. Not to worry. Life is what it is. I had a feeling that was the case.

They all fish and are quite good at it! I have seen this in Raiatea too, but not at the same scale.
Like cats and dogs in Italy and Greece… traveling to both countries I have been told there is a different attitude towards animals in those cultures… but they all seemed well and well-fed… I really can’t judge.
I saw so many feral starving cats and dogs in Greece, both in Athens and on some islands. They poisoned the feral dogs before the olympics, which I saw.. It was really sad…….Rome has that amazing cat sanctuary in the middle of ancient Roman ruins. I did a post on it.

We are looking for a dog. I just saw some Boston Terrier pups, adogable <3
Mine is such a good dog. I hav a brown Boston. They get them by inbreeding which I didn’t know , just fell in love with the little guy. He’s had some health issues as a result so if you consider a Boston I think the black and white are the way to go. ♥️
I have to go bigger because the dog has to hold his own at The Holler. We are fenced but there are lots of coyotes around and a small dog is too tempting to the coyotes…..
Oh , that’s right. My previous dog was a Dobie, such a sweet dog. She did not live up to their reputation at all. She weighed about 90 pounds. Beautiful and gentle.
I saw an amazing dobie puppy for sale. But, I have selected my doogie!!! We pick her up Wed/Thurs. I feel like I am adopting a baby!

Gasp! OK, sold….book that place Mr B! How utterly awesome to holiday with doggies 7/24. OK, maybe they can’t come to bed with you but hey, 7/18 would be a dream. I can’t tell you how much that doggie at the door looks like my old dog Jasper! Oh my gosh, I really miss him. Who feeds them and cares for them? Are they strays? Some have homes of their own. There is an active SPCA in Raro. Many of these days were spayed, given medical treatment and roam around, being cared for by tourists, islanders, and the island itself.
