A face only a mother could love?
Nah, I think he’s a looker!
Apparently the lobos girls agree!
Patagonian Sea Lions are larger than their northern counterparts, and genetically distinct.
The males can grow up to 8 feet in length and weigh up to 800 pounds.
They have the archetypical lionesque heads with manes of fur, which make them quite impressive.
They are a protected species as there are only an estimated 265,000 of them left in the wild.
Comments are restored and will hopefully work, and I so very much miss hearing from you!!
Cheers to you from El Fin del Mundo, Ushuaia Argentina, the southern most city in the world~
I have really enjoyed traveling along on your amazing trip, Cindy! What amazing creatures inhabit our unique Earth!

I love their faces. When I saw the first photo I couldn’t tell exactly what type of animal it was. I remember seeing sea lions profiled on a sea rescue type program and I was shocked to find out how massive they are. They are beautiful creatures.

They are amazing and I grew up around the nouthern ones and have always loved them. The northern ones are bigger and even more impressive!

What an experience it must have been to grow up around sea lions.
As I read your comment I was thinking I need to get to the zoo. While I’d love the opportunity to see many of these types of animals in the wild it’s highly unlikely I’ll be able to do so any time soon. But should the opportunity present itself I am thankful for the technology of cell phone cameras to see and capture these beauties.

So totally adorable 🙂 I once went for an early morning swim with some seals and sea lions in a sanctuary (not Patagonian ones, of course), and fed them some fish for breakfast. Sea lions have really tickly whiskers if they brush up against your bare legs 🙂
Wishing you a wonderful New Year, Cindy, filled with peace and joy.

They sure are sweet looking…..until you see those teeth, LOL. As a kid of 14, I holiday’ed with a family down the west coast of Oregon. We stopped at a lighthouse in Seaside, Oregon where you rode an elevator down into a cave where sea lions swam into to rest on rocks. You also got an envelop of fish to throw out at them. I remember it being super loud with their honks for food. “Over here, over hear, over hear” it sounded like to me. I don’t know if it still operates but that’s as close as I ever got to sea lions in nature………hardly a natural habitat, LOL. xo K

What a fun experience that clearly stuck in your memory. When I was a kid there was a big storm and this big male seal lion used the high tides and waves to strand himself on top of a giant rock. He sat up there like king of all he perceived! He eventually got off, but I have no idea how!

I guess he’d have to swan dive off of there when he got hungry 😀 Now that there, would have been another great photo 😀 Kawabunga !
