Spain & Portugal have stunning stained glass windows,
like these in Madrid,
and others much older as is this beauty in Mallorca.
Some are secular such as this one in Aviero Portugal,
and others modern and religious like Gaudi’s stunners in La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.
This hotel in Lisbon had a historic stained glass ceiling.
Cheers to you from the sacred stained glass artistry of Portugal & Spain~
Stunning aren’t they.
Yes, I love the mix of truly old and modern!
Awesome photos Cindy…thanks for sharing…:-)
Ahhh, thank you so much more for appreciating & cheers to you!
What more can be said Cindy, you photo’s are amazing, thank you sharing the beauty of your gift.
Thank you so much more for your lovely kindness!
It is always a pleasure to visit your beautiful blog.
<3 <3
Love the Gaudi’s 😄
Aren’t they amazing and there are so many of them in the cathedral, it is beauty overload!
Stunningly beautiful, Cindy.
I am so pleased you think and happy weekend to you Isabelle!
Das ist Klasse. Wolfgang
Vielen dank mein lieber Freund Wolfgang und Froliche wochenende!
The glass ceiling is amazing. I wouldn’t have a problem spending a few days in this gorgeous hotel.
Yes, she was a grand old dame! I love these old historic hotels~
I do to, they have so much flair. Whenever I traveled, no matter where I was, I always looked up the oldest 4 or 5-star hotel and I went there and had coffee or a drink. 🙂
Yes!! We are in full accord~ <3
Wauw, very beautiful !!!
I am so glad you enjoyed them! The windows in Madrid really caught my eye because they were so bold, original and uniqe.
Beautiful and amazing – love these! 🙂
So happy you do & thank you too!
They’re gorgeous!
Aren’t they amazing, such shining beauty lights up the inner spaces~
The power of light and vision!
It’s a beauty to behold!
The radiance inspires,
a wonderful selection
Ahhh, so touched you see these as do my friend and cheers to you!
A beautiful art form, Cindy.
Leslie
It is incredibly special!
It sure was.
Leslie
Really beautiful! Love the brilliant rich colors.
I do too. They uttlerly transform often dark interiors and bath them in colored light!
Truly beautiful!
I think so too and am so glad you feel this!
What a feast! Funny, the Gaudi and the more abstract graphic and secular ones don’t appeal to me as much as the older, narrative ones—Madrid, Mallorca—where the art and craft seem imbued with deep religious conviction, and the colors seem wilder, more saturated and loving one another. Still, I love all stained glass. Thanks for a beautiful tour.
“,,,where the art and craft seem imbued with deep religious conviction, and the colors seem wilder, more saturated and loving one another.”
Yes this artistry is moving in ways that are hard to articulate. The artistic conversion of religious passion to visible art in the form of stained glass evokes a feeling of sacredness, of the artists desire to depcit beauty and the religious feelings this creates inside of them. This is incredibly moving to me also.
Thank you for such a sensitive, nuanced comment Cynthia~
Stain glass art has to be some of the most stunning art in the world! They’re like mosaic but elevated to another level. Love these! Thanks for sharing them, Cindy!
Yes I so agree with you. Seeing these masterpieces of light and color in old cathedreals is one of the pure joys of traveling to Europe. They evoke a feeling of sacredness~
Wow, Cindy! These are absolutely majestic! The colors are so vibrant! Cher xo
So very happy you enjoyed them Cher and cheers to you my friend~
🙂 xo
Magnificent!
I think they are too. So pleased we agree & cheers to you Bette!
Such a beautiful work of art and craft. Timeless, I guess one could say as it is something that just retains its beauty and never looks aged, I suppose. I wonder how they keep it all so clean from dust that would surely collect through the years.
Lots of restoration and TLC I would guess, but I really don’t know. They are timelessly beautiful though aren’t they~
Yes. They are.
I love the stained glass windows, they are impressive, Cindy.
I am so glad you do Ranu and hope you are well my friend~
Reblogged this on Smorgasbord – Variety is the spice of life and commented:
Cindy Knoke with a celebration of stained glass windows from her recent trip to Portugal.. stunning..
They are special aren’t they Sally. Such a beautiful art form. Thank you my friend and cheers to you too~ <3
Wonderful glass works! They seem to be big sizes too.
Some of them are very large. Gaudi’s are huge! So pleased you enjoyed them and be well my friend~
I’m a big fan of stained glass, so this was so amazing to see. What a wonderful trip you must have had. <3
I found your comment in spam and am so happy you alerted Sally to it or I never would have known. I have no idea why this happened and am so glad you told me. Very frustrating for both of us! I am so pleased you love stained glass! Ido too~ <3 <3
I’m glad that you fished me out from spam, thanks to Sally. Your post was so https://widgets.wp.com/notifications/2559452889#mesmerizing. Excellent photos. <3
I am just so sad you were put in spam in the first place. Bless Sally for being such a wonderful facilitator for bloggers. She really is wonderful as are you! Cheers to you both~ <3
Speechless with your capture of these incredible works of art ~ such a difficult exposure and you knocked it out of the park 🙂 Wishing you a great summer Cindy, safe travels!
Awww, so awesome to hear from you! I have to go see what you’ve been up to. Thank you Randall and be well my friend~
Absolutely beautiful!!!!
They instill hope and beauty in our hearts. Things we really need right now. <3
Yes. Blessings and peace! Stay safe.❤✌
Amazing patience and care in the making of such things. That is a wonder in itself. 🙂
It is a beautiful world with so many people doing such amazing things even amidst all the human heartbreak. Be well Graham & cheers to you my friend~
Just love the ambiance that beautiful stained glass creates! I’m awed by the ones with the irregular mosaic look with the warm colors (like the 4th and 6th from the top). So fiery! All of them inspire me though. I’ve decided that my future home will have stained glass work (definitely with birds and sky motif)!
Interesting, you picked a VERY old window from the main cathedral in Mallorca Spain and the more modern Gaudi window in La Sagrada. It is just such an enduring and hope inspiring art form, which is amazing considering it is fragile and made of glass, but like all art, certain pieces resonate more with certain people. Fascinating and wonderful when you think about all of this.
I have always had stained glass in my house, and cut art glass. I find it so beautiful.
Cheers to you Lynn and hope you are well my dear friend~ <3
SO beautiful, esp. the Gaudi!
Yes! Gaudi is so incredibly unique that it is awe inspiring.
Clearly, a genius.
Yes they are all beautiful , biased as I might be 😉 (being Portuguese) , but what astounds me is how you captured their colours and the light coming through 🙂 That was an amazing job

Ahhh, Portugal, I will love you forever. I know I have told you that you live in the place I would most like to live. You are close enough to the mainland, but you live in this paradise in the midst of The Atlantic. I can’t believe how amazing your posts and photos are of the Azores througout the seasons. I am so glad I met you and I love your country and your islands. <3
I would love to live on the Azores too 😉
For now I live a bit south of Lisbon which is also very beautiful 🙂

I love stained glass! Great shots Cindy! 🙂 <3
So pleased you enjoyed and be well Natalie~
You too Cindy❣😘
<3
Love stained glass – and of course your photos are brilliant. Few photographers capture the true essence of a work.
You are a dear friend Sheri~ <3
These are a real eye-feast, thanks.
So pleased you enjoyed and Happy Sunday!
Beautifully captured and you have a good library of photos. I have some from Chartres and the fascinating Stained glass museum there. We have a friend who restores and creates her own stained glass in Spain.
The restoration work is fascinating isn’t it. I love the way they match the ancient glass. Cheers to you my friend and hope all is well with you~
Thanks and with you.
The colours are enough to lift everyone’s spirits. The colours are very vibrant so I am wondering when they were made
The only really old one is in Mallorca and you are right, the newer ones tend to have more vibrant colors and larger individual pieces of glass making the color pop out at you and appear brighter.
The quality of the workmanship is simply stunning!
Such talent and appreciation of beauty is a beautiful thing to behold!
Wow that is beautiful!
Yes! I love it too! <3
How grand!! Love the details you captured, Cindy.
Thank you for the tour!
As always Amy, having you along makes everything better~
Hard to be indifferent to beauty, art, light and god in such company.
Not one word should be added to this wonderful comment~. <3 <3
I’m ‘flabberglassted’, my friend! ٩(◕ั ∀◕ั๑٩)
You crack me up which is not a very good verb for this subject! 😎 ٩(◕ั ∀◕ั๑٩) *-)
Yes, I know it’s bad…hehe ೭੧(❛▿❛✿)੭೨
What I call ‘heavenly’ photos. <3
Awww, you are a lovely friend. The subjects make the heaven. <3
That’s what I meant, lol, the subects. But no don’t your skills taking photos enhance the beauty. <3
You are a lovely friend, my friend!
Beautiful, Cindy. I especially like the on in Madrid and more abstract one Aviero. Thanks for sharing!
Yes! The Madrid ones are my favorites as well.
Beautifully photographed
So kind and so appreciated. Thank you~
Yay,. Tweet Button! LOL
It is there in honor of you! <3 <3
Photography has the power to stop time; it allows us the moment again and again. Your photos invite us to come again and again. Hugs, my dear friend.
Oh how beautifully thought & expressed. These old cathedrals stop time to don’t they, as if your walking into the past. I never thought of it in exactly this way, but it is a special experience which I seek out. Thank you for giving me the idea and words my dear friend Rebecca and blessings to you too! <3
Many hugs coming your way!!💛❤️💛
Cindy, how did you know I absolutely LOVE stained glass windows?? And these are gorgeous. Thank you for bringing them up close for our enjoyment!

There’s soemthing about the glow of glass that inspire and frees the soul. Lovely images!
Yes and it brings out wonderfully poetic comments in viewers like you!
Wow, what a beautiful and colorful images

Have a nice week
kisses
Thank you much more for your very kind appreciation! <3
oh very welcome
Kisses
I love stained glass windows. Thanks, Cindy!
They create comforting light don’t they!
Awestruck by the intensity of the color…a visual feast of epic proportions 😀
I agree with you! I was really struck by the color intensity especially in the pieces from Madid~
🙂
Ah, such beauty. My favorite feature of any church building.
Yes, I agree with you. Old cathedrals can often be dark and the shifting colored light these windows create is just so lovely.
I love that blue they use in stained glass — St Mary’s colour.
I love blue too. When I was a kid I used to collect blue sea glass. Now, it is practically impossible to find due to our reliance on plastic.
What a beautiful, magical thing to have collected! Have you still got your blue sea glass collection?
My mother has it, so yes, I do! We made them into wooden box covers. Thank you for asking.
Great images, have to admit my favorite of these is Aviero Portugal.
Yes, I love it also. It may be a family crest.
Wow gorgeous!
Muchas gracias mi amiga!
Xxx
Wonderful artwork, Cindy. 🙂
Merci beaucoup mon ami~
I love stained glass – modern or historic. Great photographs, Cindy.
Muchas gracias mi amiga!
What beautiful stained glass, and lovely hotel interior with stained glass ceiling! Gorgeous photos, Cindy!
Thank you Lavinia and so pleased you enjoyed them!
Stunning artistry one and all. I’m always amazed too at how these windows come thru history still looking spectacular. That’s a gorgeous hotel ! Having just come from Paris, I have a new appreciation for the craftsmanship that went into a building in the past. Probably cost prohibitive these days and perhaps there aren’t too many people who could even make these wonderful pieces of art. xK
Yes, I know exactly what you mean. In Europe you see the atttention and value placed on artisans and artistry in the past. We no longer place enough emphasis on this in my opinion.
Artistic beauty enhances daily life significantly. Not all of us want to live in a world that values on selfies, the Kardashians, and Pokeman go~
True that, Pokeman Go seems to be all the rage but I’ve never spent time playing these games. I guess it might actually get kids outside, so that’s a plus 😀
Good point! As long as they don’t walk off a cliff or into traffic following pokeman as he goes, which apparently some people have done. It is always good practice to look up occasionaly from your hand-held device when following it outside to clarify where you might actually be. If you follow GPS or google maps to my house you will drive into a cow pasture and meet the ankol-watusi African bull up close and personal in your now stuck in a cow pie car.
😉
You did a great job of photographing these gorgeous stained glass windows, Cindy — by featuring just the colored glass on a black background, you made it easy to enjoy these works of art. Thanks so much~~
Your comment makes it so worthwhile. Thank you.
Incredible…
They really are!
j’aime beaucoup toutes ces photos de vitraux.Félicitations!Pensées.
Sylvie
Je suis honore! Merci beaucoup et acclamations a vous!
Brilliant Cindy– so many ways to used this windows– thank you.
Thank you Rhonda and cheers to you too!
I love stained glass. These are beautiful.
The artists who made them are pretty impressive aren’t they!
Beautiful richly designed stained glass☺ Could look great in the Wolfie den!
I can see him there! (V●ᴥ●V)
He’s awestruck!! 😉
That makes three of us! 👧 👧 🐺
They do have all sorts of wonderful art and architecture – your photos do not make them less beautiful.
Which is an accomplishment, laughing!
I’ve always been drawn to stained glass, Cuz. It’s easily found in many of the churches built before 1950s but one of the most wonderful examples I found a few years ago was at the Tiffany Museum in Winter Park, FL. Your pics are wonderful. 🙂
You are a wonderful cousin, cuz! I would love to see the windows in Winter Park~
Translucent tapestries!
Aren’t they just exquisite art forms! Wonderful to hear from you Resa and hope all is well with you~ <3
All’s well! ♥
Thanks so much for sharing these, Cindy. They’re stunning and it must have been awe inspiring to experience them yourself. Stained glass creates an incredible ambiance and for me have such a strong spiritual feel as a result.
xx Rowena
I agree with you Rowena. Stained glass does indeed have a strong spiritual presence that is quite moving to experience.!
