Beauty Thy Name is Budapest~

Budapest doesn’t need to Deck the Halls.

These halls have been continuously decked,

for a very long time.

beauty.

  1. Many, many years ago, I was told that the two places in the world most hospitable to poets were anywhere in Wales and Budapest, Hungary. I know that there is a poem all schoolchildren in Hungary learn by heart…”The Bards of Wales”….composed by Arany in mid nineteenth century, and put to music more recently. I have never been to Wales or Budapest….but I can see from these gorgeous photos that Budapest would indeed be a place very hospitable to poets.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Cindy.

    1. I will google “The Bard of Wales.” Budapest is a magical place that provides powerful hits of beauty and history that would inspire you Cynthia. But, truthfully, you are inspired anywhere you are. I am lucky to know you.

  2. Budapest is one of the most beautiful cities on my opinion. Lucky you to be there before Christmas. I think it is even more beautiful by that holiday. However, home is the sweatiest place of all.
    Merry Christmas!

  4. Amazing works of art, those decked halls, and oh how fortunate that for hundreds of years, so many eyes have received their glory. Great photos, Cindy. Happy Holidays!

  5. I see that you got away from the lobster. Maybe somebody ate him.
My father was in the two cities, Buda and Pest, and said that was the most beautiful part of Europe that he saw on his tour of Europe in the 1930s. Those Hapsburgs knew how to live.
You gave us beautiful pictures, thank you. I don’t know how much of the architecture is old, restored, or new, but I believe that if it is relatively new, as much as possible, duplication of pre-war structures as possible was maintained.
    Have a wonderful Christmas.

    1. You are right on all counts. Much is very old. Your father’s tour in the 1930’s would be fascinating to hear about. As I travel through Europe, I often think of my grandfather who has been every place I have been and more. I am just retracing his steps. Merriest of Christmases to you!

    1. Cannot wait to follow you on your adventures around the globe Alison! Do you think we will ever be at the same place at the same time? That would be incredible! Happy and Healthy New Year to you my friend~

  6. Thanks for sharing this beauty, and for all the wonders you have given us through the year! Merry Christmas to you & yours, and look forward to continuing the bloody journey in 2016. Cheers! 🙂

      1. Cracking up!! Love the bloody journey!! 😉 😉 Once I thanked someone for a post and commented, “Thank you fiend.” So don’t feel bad! 😉 😉 Oh, and in German once I said mean instead of mine, as in “Thank you mean friend!” Laughing more…..Merry Christmas and Happy New Year my friend~ <3

    1. Some were rebuilt, others amazingly untouched, others repaired. The ancient old timbered buildings in Bamburg amazed me. I am so glad they were spared. I hear a lot of ancient art and buildings are currently being destroyed in the Middle East. So sad.

  7. The beauty of artistic expression! A wonderful post for Christmas. All the very, very best of the holiday season. See you in 2016!!! Looking forward to following your adventures.

  8. Budapest…a lifetime fascination with this city, home to my paternal grandfather. Thanks for sharing all this beauty, Cindy. Merry Christmas. Looking forward to your posts in 2016. They are always special. 💂 🎅 👼

  9. Budapest is another on my Bucket List … and I’m sure you have only given us a small taste. Merry Christmas to you, and safe travels. My Christmas post will be up early Christmas Eve.

    1. The lobby photo is this post is the hotel we stayed at which was the model for The Grand Hotel Budapest. It has quite the storied history! Merry Christmas dear friend!

  10. Absolutely beautiful photos, Cindy. That lady making pigs in the blanket made me hungry. I ate those at a Hungarian wedding reception In Cleveland, Ohio years ago. They were delicious. 🙂 — Suzanne

  11. Simply magnificent Cindy! I love how much thought went into the architecture and design – to have all that ambient light pouring in from above and accenting the gold and various shapes. The day I visit these places, they’re going to have a hard time getting me to leave!

Merry Christmas to you and yours Cindy! And thank you for this precious gift as always. <3 ~Lynn

    1. You get goosebumps and often feel this transendant wonderful peace over come you. Sometimes if you’re lucky, the organist will come to practice, or the choir will practice. When this happens I just sit, listen and cry. It is almost too beautiful to bear.

  12. Clowie

It must be a fascinating place to visit. The photos are beautiful.

Have a wonderful time over the holidays and all the best for 2016.

    1. When I look at these big glass and concrete box buildings and huge electronic flashing signs, I get sad and wonder what happened to us? Why did we lose this cultivation of beauty that we obviously had in the past?

  13. What a gorgeous city. Thanks for sharing your amazing photos, Cindy. You’ve done a beautiful job capturing the grandeur of these buildings. I’ve never been, and must add it to my ever-growing list of travel destinations.

    1. It is so good for your psyche to have an ever growing list of travel destinations! It is even better when you start ticking them off, which I hope you will share with me when you do! <3

    1. Wow! The old section has not changed much I imagine except for Andrassy. Would love to hear your impressions when you return. I met an American exchange student in the grocery store. This happens all the time. He was homesick over the holidays. Merry Christmas my friend to you and your family!

  14. I love that city too! Very beautiful, as pictured in your gorgeous photos. My current client has offices there, so I might get lucky and go there this spring again, we’ll see.

  15. Many years ago I had the chance to visit Budapest and I did not take it…and have regretted it ever since. The third shot you have is simply majestic, shows incredible talent, beauty and for me a history that I would have love to have seen. Travel can be such fun and rewarding, and even when not actually visiting but instead seeing your pics and reading your words is almost just as good 🙂

    1. I think a true traveler is always traveling in their minds. Looking at photos of other people trips and experiences just keeps the mental dialogue and imagery going. Our imagination is the ultimate traveler and photos keep us ever exploring. Happy New Year Randall~

  16. Dear Cindy, did you also do the art Nouveau and Art Deco trip and visited the peculiar Art Deco museum? I do hope you also went to take a tea-time at the big art Nouveau bookstore’s third floor where we spend ‘hours’ looking at the decorations, enjoying very nice cakes and coffee.

    1. It is an amazing city isn’t it? So much to see and explore on both sides of the river. We didn’t visit this museum, but we stayed in the Art Deco section of the city and explore so many glorious Deco buildings, like the Lyst Academy pictured here. We stayed in the Art Deco hotel that was the inspiration for the movie The Grand Hotel Budapest. It is an Deco tour de force. Gorgeous, historic, old city. Did you visit St Stephens Basilica? Stunning.

      1. A pity we had no time to go in St Stephens Basilica. But next time we shall visit the city it will be on our list. We made plans to return again to that beautiful city to stay there for at least three days.
