Such wooly adorable animals. No wonder it’s called Yellowstone, the yellow is emphasised by the contrasting blue mountains. Cindy, you do a marvellous job introducing us to so many new animals and places!

You know, it is 5 am here.. and I am looking at this pics and I suddenly remembered.. to my utter horror.. there was this all-nighter with younger boys where they drank and drank, and I caught up with them just to show them I still am with them etc.. and then.. here is what I remembered.. one of them offered me a colt.. and I said, wow, that is exactly what I promised my daughter on her tenth birthday.. (which is five years away)… and he said, whoa, then take one.. four black one white.. any one.. I said give me any black one…
And now I am horrorstruck.. what?? a horse? a pony? my wife is going to kill me.. not the least because no one has seen one in this region since forever… and horror, this guy from the north is getting me one soon.. and I am sure my wife is just going to use me and the colt for the glue factory.. Talk about drunken promises.. I don’t know how to take care of a horse/pony.. absolutely no idea.. and this is not going to be some fairy tale story for sure..
and then I came here.. saw the caption.. they look cute.. huh??? ok.. as long as they remain in the pics.. 😀
Ok, long irrelevant comment.. but your pics are to blame 😀 haha They may be cute enough, but I don’t want any of those here.. though I keep asking you for all those animals in your pics.. (Ok, I admit.. the grizzly was far-fetched.. but hey.. a teeny one would be no problem).. I just hope you don’t surprise me one day with a gift of some honey-eater 😀

Cute critters! My dad told me he used to service radio towers on the plains in Kansas when he was young. He said he was in great shape because the buffalo would chase him from tower to tower.

I love the bison. It’s only been in the past couple of years that I learned the story of the Goodnights, and their work on the bison’s behalf. Now, some descendents of that herd roam the panhandle. I hope they’re as cute as the ones you show here!
Was Goodnight the man who gave bison from his Texas herd to Yellowstone to restore the herd? I know they got down to a n of 20 buffalo before new ones were introduced.
Yes – in 1902 or so some Goodnight animals were given to Yellowstone. I think there were 23. A different sort of descendent of the Goodnights, Veryl, is an accomplished sculptor and Western artist. She lives in Colorado — you can read more about her here.

They would grow up and become quite LARGE, but there is room for large critters at The Holler. I don’t think the bulls would like it much though, and it would present additional challenges on my daily constitutional walking regime……but heck, Buffalo at The Holler? Bring ’em on!

Oh you must miss it terribly. I saw two of the red newborns. The herd protected them so intensely, I couldn’t get a decent shot of them. They are probably born too late and may not make it through the winter. Such noble and iconic creatures! <3

White buffalo have a lot of spiritual significance in Native American culture. If I were you, I would google what dreaming about a herd of them signifies. If you find out, let me know. I would be interested.

It is tons of articles out there on white buffalo, but mostly related to one, not a herd, especially to the prophecy of white buffalo calf woman and dream interpretations of buffalos in general. During my googling I came across a video of a Chief talking about this prophecy and then I found a picture of him in the feathered headdress. He’s the 19th Generation Keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe, And this is were it gets kind of weird..a week ago I was on a fullmoon meditation with drums. During this meditation a native american was guiding me around pointing to different things in nature, flowers, rivers, mountain and so on. But before he guided me, I saw this featherdressed native american for a little while and he looked pretty much like this guy in the photo, right down to the same color on the shirt and headdress… How creepy or cool is that!! I never would have seen this if you had not adviced me to google my dream 🙂

Yes, it does look like snow in the photos, but it is sulphur from the geysers and I am sure it is an effective delouser!

I was puzzled by some of the bulls who were still shedding their winter coats. They better hurry up before winter hits!
I think nature is a bit confused. I was out cutting back the plants to prepare for winter and I have new plants coming up.

Yes, he definitely is doing just that. Others birds do this too with the buffalo, and of course we both saw a lot of this in Africa.
I have always been fascinated by symbiotic relations in nature. Birds on buffalo, cattle, etc. is one of the most obvious, and to me, most amusing. –Curt

Yes! Humans seem to have a hard time learning from their mistakes. The Yellowstone herd was down to twenty animals at one point. It is remarkable they are not extinct. The wolves are back too. Over a hundred in Yellowstone.
Cindy, what can I say? These pictures are so real and gorgeous! how far away are you when you take these pictures? They are so adorable and majestic! Truly an amazing thing to be able to witness!
So happy you see them as I do! I stayed about 25 yards away from them. There has been an uptick in gorings this year from tourists who get too close to them. I took a photo of a family getting out of their car, walking over to the herd and taking a selfie in patting distance of the bull. Crazy behavior. I think they didn’t know. The park needs to print warnings in multiple languages.

Gorgeous shots! They are adorable animals. So, I’d love to bounce one on my knee! How small are these babies?
Hmmmmm, a little large for knee bouncing I’m afraid. An adult bull can weigh up to 2,600 pounds. The little babies probably vary from 100- 250 pounds, but I am guessing. The newborns are red, completely beyond adorable, and they you could cuddle, but mama and papa would be sure not to like it, and as I mentioned, they are kinda too large to voluntarily irritate!

I was using a figure of speech. There is an old saying, “She gave birth to a bouncing baby boy,” who knows what the derivation of this saying is, but I just applied to the buffalo. It really makes no sense at all either way!

I’ve always wondered what they look like close up. Do you know how big is the buffalo herd?
Estimates vary, but Yellowstone’s population is somewhere around 4.200-5000.
That is a balm. I hate the thought that we wiped a species from the earth. We shouldn’t have such power. I still feel bad for the dodo, dumb as it was reputed to be.
Yes, it makes me miserable to think of all the species we have destroyed. Consider the Tasmanian Tiger. Just in the last ten years a bunch of species have become extinct, like the Zanaibar Leopard, the West African Black Rhino, the Javan Tiger, and The Little Blue Macaw. You are right too much power and too little common sense.
Oh golden prairies! I flew into Edmonton in a smaller prop plane on Wednesday and got great shots of the patchwork prairies. The topography is so different from the air. I do prefer
terra-firma to peeking out at the clouds, but there’s privilege in making like a bird now and again. If I was a little bird, I wouldn’t set myself on that buffalo, he probably smells pretty ripe from his beloved sulfur-bath. I might just swing by and wave a wing from up high. 😀 x k
