The old city walls of remarkable Tallinn, the capitol of Estonia.
The first fortresses in Tallinn were built in 1050 and the old city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The stunning Alexander Nevsky Orthodox Cathedral is the the largest in Tallinn.
Tallinn is visually charming at every turn.
As visitors we felt warmly welcomed, making the city a delight to visit.
The Nevsky Cathedral is astonishing.
As if all this isn’t enough to make you fall in love with Tallinn, it is rated one of the top ten digital cities of the world along with Tokyo and Singapore, because of it’s widely available and free wifi, and it’s general public spirited digital saavy. As a person who travels a lot each year and is addicted to wifi, this is massively appreciated. Thank you Estonia!

Cheers to you from the very fast wifi of Tallinn Estonia!
It looks amazing!
Such a charming city and so happy you liked it too!
So pretty. Like a fairy tale setting in a Ballet… thanks for sharing eve.
Yes, well said, similar in this fairy tale feel with Prague and Brugge!
My wife and I have sweet memories of the city and the country. Thank you for beautiful photos.
Oh so happy you do and cheers too!
What a beautiful city! I almost feel as though I’m travelling with you 🙂
You are and it is making the trip more fun!
Wow, really astonishing 🙂 Great pics
Sometimes the less high profile places are the best! Cheers to you & thank you~
It’s very colourful!
Love the exuberant use of color!
Exuberant is exactly the right word! I was born in Canada, and when I go back (from Australia), I am struck by the dull, dowdy colours used in a country that is stricken with snow and gloom for many months each year.
These pictures are a feast for the eyes, Cindy. What a beautiful city. That cathedral is amazing. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you more for appreciating my friend! <3
Einfach wunderschön ich wünsche dir einen glücklichen schönen Tag und ein gutes Wochenende liebe Grüße und Freundschaft.Gislinde
Sie sind ein guter Freund Gislinde ! Schönes Wochenende für Sie und danke! <3
This brings back lots of nice memories of our visit to Tallinn last April…truly a nice city. (Suzanne)
I always think exactly the same thing when I return home from Europe or Latin America! Cheers to you~
I’ve been wanting to go there in a vague sort of way, Cindy – your photos are making me think more seriously about it…! RH
Oh I hope you do go and look forward to your post and pics!
Liebe Cindy das sind ja unbeschreibliche schöne Fotos einfach super fotografiert bin begeistert toll ein schönes Wochenende wünsche ich dir in Freundschaft Klaus
Vielen danke Klaus! Freundschaft! <3
Charming and with good wifi. I want to be there!
Basically that summarizes an ideal travel destination for me! 😉
Thank you for posting this!
Thank you for appreciating it!
Looks like you’ve had/are having a wonderful trip Cindy, beautiful photos of a places I must one day visit 🙂
Thanks much and you will be happy when you do!
Beautiful city. Thank you for sharing the photos. I love traveling this way!
I love traveling with you! Merci beaucoup~
Avec plaisir
Gorgeous photos. Its old town is lovely – “must to visit”.
Yes, you can travel along the city walls which is always a big treat!
Klasse Fotos. LG. Wolfgang
Vielen danke Klaus. Gute Nacht aus Switzerland!
You made it to the top of the hill!
I did and inside and along the old city walls!
On an odd note. I saw that Estonia has very high internet speeds compared to other counties. …
Beautiful photos!
You can see why I love it so!!! <3
Thanks for taking me to Tallinn, what a fantastic place!
You know how to find incredible places and show them better than a travel broacher.
You are simply a great friend Jack and I can’t wait to take you and Pauline to tea when I next come to your incredible continent!
Looking forward to meeting you in person.
Like in the song thank you for being my friend.
Yes, me too and I know it will happen within the next two years!
You certainly are taking a Grand Tour. How many countries have visited? Great photos.
Boy I hadn’t thought to count, but will now…….I think nine, but my husband isn’t here so I am probably missing one! Here’s the list, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Estonia, Russia, and now Switzerland for a whole week!!! 9 countries, six weeks. Thanks for making me add them up…
Isn’t Tallinn such a pleasant surprise! … and you have captured it well. Enjoy your next stop.
Yes indeed. My next goal is to spend more time in Eastern Europe. I have only been to Estonia and the Czech Republic and was completely charmed by both countries.
Good point … us too, as we eye a river cruise in eastern Europe sometime in the future.
I have heard wonderful things about doing this. The trains are also quite convenient if you prefer independent travel.
Lovely how he has hung his artwork 🙂 he seems to be prolific like me 🙂 Off to NYC to see Mike and his big NYC Art Show Opening can not wait! Photos later 🙂
Love NYC and know you will have a blast! You are such a talent ma deah~
I love that all the buildings in all the countries you’re visiting are so colorful! We should be doing that in the U.S. Thanks for the photos, and glad you’re having such a great visit.
This is how I feel every time I return home! Why so much beige????
Such great colours. In comparison, we seem rather drab over here. Although we seem to make up for it with intricate. I hope your having fun on your trip. 🙂
I will be in your country in, let’s see……seven months! But whose counting……;)
Truly astonishing. Beautiful photos!
Merci beaucoup from sunny Switzerland!
The colors and details are quite amazing. I’m quite taken with the parallels between Tallinn and Porto, Portugal, where were are now. Both are well deserving of their status as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Portugal is one country I have not been and do want to go. I can well imagine the beauty and am so glad you are there to capture it so beautifully!
Thanks. Like your description of Estonia, Porto offers many interesting pathways for walking and for taking time to enjoy a stroll.
So much colour! It’s a feast for the eyes! And don’t take this the wrong way, but Cindy, you really get around!
Wow.. I’m impressed. Who travels to Estonia? You do!
Awww, so appreciated…….It is interesting how the more untouted places are often the most enjoyable.
I just love all that colour. It makes our average streets in the UK look very dull in comparison.
It does and I have to hold my tongue when a friend shows me her proposed paint color scheme, usually light beige with darker beige!!!! Laughing……
Beautiful city and country, another one to add to my travel wish list…:), and yes I heard that Estonia was one of the most ‘wired’ country, I’ve also read that when they left the ex-USSR, they alledgely did suffer a massive ‘cyber attack’ believed to be orchestrated by the Russian military…
Wow, guess that would make one tech saavy!
A big smile and cheers! 🙂
Back to you my friend!
Thanks for sharing your passion Cindy. I love the colors, buildings and learning more about places that I haven’t been. blessings, Brad
Such a thoughtful comment and so motivating to encourage me to keep on bloggin!
My pleasure and vicarious thrills since I would love to be traveling and photographing!
I hope you do both and soon!!
Hi Cindy…

Thank you and you will be very glad when you go!
Stunning images Cindy. Beautiful. Loved that city. Your photograph of the painter took me back to that exact spot and sprouted the memories inside me.
How delightful and so happy to have facilitated this. All the best to you~
I love this, Doron. Especially that bright path of red! xox
Love red in interior and exterior design! Glad you do too!
I’ve been really looking forward to the posts every day from your fantastic trip. These photos are fantastic of Talinn. I was lucky enough to visit this city a couple of years ago, and agree, it’s an astonishing city.
So happy you have been to Tallinn. It is certainly a city that is well worth visiting. Thanks much & cheers~
Amazing, Cindy! You should write a travel book… 🙂
Awwwww, very nice and cheers to you Bette!
So happy to see such a special and beautiful through you lens. Happy travel, Cindy!
I have been marveling at your recent photos on my kindle fire as we travel through Europe by train. My commnets often won’t post though, so please know I am appreciating them!
The colors and the architecture are fantastic! Hugz Lisa and Bear
I agree and send hugz back to both of you!
Bright and colorful buildings, I like it. I would love to see the man do painting. I think it is fascinating to watch.
Talent in operation on a side street. I love it too. Cheers to you my friend and thank you too!
Such beauty & such lively happy colors!
Makes one feel calm, and then the church bells ring……nirvana!
What a beautiful, bright wonderfully energy filled place. I love the colors and the brightness.
That is such a good description of Estonia. So happy you enjoyed!
Lovely Cindy. And I have to agree with the folks who use fairy tale in their comments. That was my first reaction. –Curt
So kind Curt and yes I love these Eastern European fairy tale cities! Cheers to you my friend~
🙂
What an outstanding post, dear Cindy. Remarkable photos !.
Thanks a lot for sharing!. Happy weekend and best wishes, Aquileana 😀
I think your posts are remarkable, well researched and fascinating! Cheers to you my friend~
Reblogged this on Smorgasbord – Variety is the spice of life and commented:
We continue the journey with Cindy Knoke around Europe and this week it is Estonia – I should think tourist boards will be lining up for these shots and the others that Cindy has posted in the last few weeks.
Having you along is making the trip more fun! Cheers to you and hugz too!
Gorgeous architecture!
I agree and would love to see more of it! Cheers to you~
You, too!
Wonderful pictures! The old city reminds me of the old town in Stockholm, and the visual appeal is truly great everywhere. I could see these pictures zooming on the page 🙂
These European old walled cities are just precious wonders that give one a feeling of going back in time. We were just in Stockholm!
Oh – I hope (and pray) you liked it!!
Such a colorful and beautiful place! 🙂
Just oozes good vibrations!
Great photos! If you’re on Saaremaa be sure to visit my friends, Birgit and Andreas, and try some of their mustard. Germans making mustard in Estonia. Imagine that! http://mustjala-mustard.de/
Yum, in care you aren’t aware, I am massively in love with German food, including the real, seeded mustard! YUM!!! 🙂
That’s their business along with chutneys. I hope to get there to see them on the island one of these days.
Oh sounds so delightful. Hope you go and post about it too~
Cindy…I hope you are creating a book or books of your photo bog posts! These latest are absolutely beautiful.
Oh I haven’t kept up with that and will do it when I return, Thanks Dor for the memory prompt. My senior challenged cerebellum needs prompts!!! 😉
Seeing the world through the lens of your camera is a delight. Thank you, Cindy!
It is more of a delight to me that you enjoy it my friend. Hugz to you and thank you~
What fantastic colours and shapes! – Great photos Cindy
Honored and most appreciative! All the best to you~
What an inviting place, a mix of colors and interesting architecture, history and modernity…
Yes I agree with you. Some places have charm and warmth and Estonia has both!
Lovely place, pic and colors, Cindy!! happy Weekend my friend
So happy you enjoyed and happy Sunday to you!
Beautiful pictures, glad I chanced upon your blog. It is a treat indeed. 🙂
Awwww, very kind and very motivating! Best to you~
I’m just amazed that the buildings are so colorful (we don’t have this in the States) and the outdoor wall art is so neat.
Yes, the states always seem so beige to me when I return!! Thank goodness we have street artists though!
LOL So beige. Never thought about it ’til your post. Well, there you go…a photographer strolling the streets here, wondering at the dullness. I’m busy hearing my words. =) And huh – you’re right. The st artists do solve the problem of drab, don’t they?
Amazing architecture!
I think so too! Thank you & cheers too~
Estonia may be astonishing, but your artistry with the lens is even moreso, Cuz. The St. Petersburg posts and this one from Estonia are marvelous. You seem to have an instinct for the proper angles and lighting. Looking forward to more and more. Where next ? Hugs.
You are the best cousin even though we may not be biologically related. You are family to me!
Hey Cindy, wherever you are, have a beautiful Sunday! Thanks so much for your constant visits to my blog! Take care, my friend! 🙂
And you take care my friend from sunny Zermatt Switzerland!
You know, if more people blogged and more people who can’t travel could travel with you and others thenthere really would be less tension in the world.
Yes, travel and reading about travel leads one to recoginize that we live in one world. We are all citizens of this one world. Travel forms bridges and erases divisions. It is important for this reason. Thank you for recoginizing this.
Mind blowing pictures! You have made my day. Thanks!
You just made mine! Thank you~
This is so colourful, a lovely city indeed!
So happy you enjoyed and all the best to you!
Really great shots, especially the one of the rooftops!
So happy you enjoyed and all the best to you!
Now, I don’t see the comment I made 😕 I’m back to view this beautiful town again.
Thank you for thinking about us individually and as a blog community. I know how difficult it is with wi fi when you’re in another country particularly. Happy travel, Cindy!
It is very hard to comment and keep up on blogs which is frustrating. I have from others that likes/comments are deleted. This is WP though as it happens to me too. Commnets I make disappear into thin air. Thinking of you my friend, enjoying your posts and missing making comments!
Baltic countries are hidden jewels of the world, great photos!!!! Wanda
Perfectly said & I heartily agree! <3
i love the vibrancy of these jewel tone colors…I could sit and meditate for hours there.
Hmmmmmmm, sounds like it might be time to start planning a trip, now that your son is off to college………
I wish….
Your photos are stunning… I love the colors. Looks like it would be a wonderful place to live. 😀
So pleased you enjoyed and cheers too!
Isn’t Tallinn the most beautiful city – looks just as wonderful in the last of the summer sum as it did in the throws of winter when I was visiting in January!
Oh I can’t even imagine how lovely it would look in winter! What a treat~
It was, we even managed the last of the Christmas markets in the city square. Talk about a bonus! As always, safe travels 🙂
It would be divine. I would also like to go to Salzburg for Christmas. They know how to celebrate this holiday!
Incredible photo-series dear Cindy ! Amazing views over the city, plenty of local colour and a gorgeous photo of the Cathedral ! Enjoy every minute of your travels, dear Cindy 🙂
Thank you so much for the kind comments and warm greetings. Cheers and all the best back to you my friend~
Cindy, charming town. I love the architecture and feel of the city. Thank you! Hugs! Veraiconica
The colour palate gone wild! Amazing Cindy!
Europe is so full of soul. Should I be telling you this??? 😉
It is preaching to the choir but hey it is true!
<3 <3
A fascinating looking place and the weather looks perfect – great photos!
Yes, the weather was perfect which is always a joy and the city just marvelous. So happy you enjoyed and cheers to you! <3
I love these colourful homes in what would otherwise be a grey street. It makes me think of childhood story books and fairy tales. I know where they got the inspiration for the art now – they were true after all!! 😀
Yes a lot of fairy tales come from Eastern Europe! Great that you remembered & cheers to you~
Wow! You visit some amazing places!
I’m working at it! 😉 Cheers to both of you! <3
It never ceases to amaze me that we tear down buildings that are less than a few years old. Europe is a perfect example of architecture that survives the ages.
Yes, it is living history and enables one to travel back in time, hence it must be preserved! <3
Estonia looks so beautiful – the colours are amazing (as are your photos as usual)!
Your kindness is much appreciated and most motivating! Thank you~
You’re welcome 🙂
So fascinating and impressive – very well captured… 🙂
So appreciate and very thoughtful of you! 🙂
Stunning as captured by you.
Awwwww, so thoughtful! <3
These colorful photos are awesome! <3
Very happy you enjoyed lovely Estonia & cheers to you~
How fantastic to travel thru so many countries and still be thrilled at every turn. It’s kind of neat too that my Mother-in-laws maiden name is Tallin (one less n). She doesn’t know too much of her genealogy though, which is sad. I love that throughout Europe, you see very old homes still in use. No one minds a little missing paint or brick. Very quaint Cindy, thanks for sharing.
What a thoughtful and kind reply, and yes the old buildings of Europe are wonderful visually and give one a feeling of traveling back in time that is truly priceless. Cheers to you my friend and thank you for wonderful comments~
I can see by the many, many comments that others agree with me on the beauty of these photos. I think you and I could travel together, as we have the same taste when it comes to wonderful places to visit. I visited Talliin on the same trip as Zermatt, and again, really want to return. Talliin is a bit of a unknown gem, and my experience was equally fantastic. Thanks for showing me Talliin in summer. Excellent photos.
So you went to Tallin and Zermatt in the winter. What a different, but wonderful experience that would be. Zermatt would be full of skiers, but Tallin must have been delightfully empty. Winter in my experience is the best time to visit crowded places in Europe, like Venice, Florence, Paris etc. I would love to make a winter trip to Tallin, Prague and Salzburg. You are adding ideas to my list!!! <3
Oh you would love it, Cindy. quiet, with some places closed up in some parts. Zermatt was alive with people. It is hard to book just a night or two in Zermatt in winter, as they are after week long bookings from skiers!
oh and the other thing is that often the sky and the matterhorn is covered with cloud in winter.
Yes it was wonderful. We went to the Uffizi and were alone with Rembrandt. Fabulous time to visit. I can just imagine the bustle of Zermatt in the winter. I like things a little quieter. Cheers to you~
I had no idea Estonia was so beautiful! xo!
Neither did I! <3 <3
Wow, what a beautiful place and digital!! I would love to go. 🙂
I confess to being just a tad digitally addicted! lol~
So am I! 🙂
Because of my university I studied in Tallin for 6 months and it was amazing. Everything so perfect, colored and beautiful, I really liked it.
Love your post and the pictures you chose.
Kiss
Oh how fortunate you are! I would have loved to do this! It must have left with some fascinating memories! Cheers to you & thanks too~
cindy, cindy, cine eşti tu oare?
de-mi produci în suflet,
tandră încântare?
Onu
There is so much old world charm and uniqueness in those ancient places, so much history. I also took a picture of a street artist when I was in Leningrad while on my trip to Russia in 1989 when it was Leningrad then, but today renamed St. Petersburg. I love the architecture and design of those old buildings and cathedrals.
Yes, so much history and I love it when the old towns are perfectly preserved and you feel as if you are stepping back in time. Must have been a very interesting trip in 1989!
It was. That was during the ‘cold war’ and their communist regime. But, was fascinating and one I’ll never forget. Since I have done so little travel outside of my own country of the United States except for trips to Canada it was my first major trip abroad until going to Israel in 2001. Would love to do more, but time, costs and health issues have prevented that so enjoy looking at photos of others who have done so much traveling as you have, so you are indeed blessed, Cindy.
What lovely sentiments and thoughtful words! I have happy that you enjoy the photos and am glad to have the chance to know you. I hope your health improves and wish you only the very best~
Tallinn is one of the places I haven’t yet gotten to visit that’s nowadays quite high on my list of to-do pleasures. When Richard conducted the choir tour concert in Budapest this summer, a delightful lady from Tallinn came and introduced herself afterward and we were both reminded of the strong arts-and-music culture that has so long been a part of what little we know of the place. Your beautiful photo-essay says that it’s also a bit of a kindred spirit to Budapest and Prague and some other favorite cities, architecturally and in its warmth and invitation to visitors, so it gave me a particular jolt of urgency to that must-visit plan! Lovely. Thanks, Cindy!!
Kathryn
Yes, Prague is probably my most adored European city. It is simply magical to me. I want very much to visit Budapest and we are in discussion about when, so it sounds like you and I are of the same disposition but in different order. I do hope you go soon and post about it too!
wunderbare fantastische Aufnahmen von Tallinn, danke, dass Du mich mitgenommen hast….
Vielen Dank für Ihre Aufmerksamkeit Ernst !
Beautiful!
So glad you enjoyed & cheers to you~
O what a beautiful and bright town!!
Hermoso
Muy amable y muchas gracias mi amiga!
Ohwow. This looks so very beautiful.
Well thank you kindly and welcome too!
