Golden Lane is a series of connected servants quarters built into the northern wall of Prague Castle. The name Golden Lane was coined in the 16th century and referred to the gold smiths who lived there among the other skilled servants.
Servants of many trades lived in these cottages.
Prague Castle was built-in first half of the tenth century and is the largest ancient castle in the world. (My next post will show you the parts of the castle that impressed me).
But, the heart of the castle for me was in these quaint, charming-homes, of the industrious and skillful servants.
Check out the ceiling detailing.
Golden Lane was continuously occupied until WWII. Franz Kafka lived in cottage 22 from 1916-17. The cottages have been restored with their original contents, reflecting the different eras of their occupation, and are now preserved as museums that the public can tour.
Ahoj!
Your images really give a feel for the ambience and character. Number six has the effects of a watercolor–well done.
Very kind!! Thank you Sally!
This is the part of the castle that impressed me the most, boy would I love to be working in the leather shop. 🙂
Wouldn’t it be wonderful to travel around through time? Popping into here and there???? Cheers to you my friend~
The cottages look so cozy…….and comfy. I don’t know why we or some of us think we need such big houses. I could easily fit right in there. 🙂
Interesting isn’t! The charm and appeal of these very small living spaces. Maybe it is telling us something about materialism……..cheers to you!
I want a tool bench like that!
Sachem does too! You’ll have to flip a coin over it!!!!
🙂
The place from the outside looks like a miniature house. I like the plant pots on the roof. I am wondering how they water them though.
Good question. I have no idea. They must clamber up there……….Hugs!
I know that Golden Lane! Almost bought a puppet there.
Wonderful isn’t it! I remember your posting about Prague very well! Cheers to you in gay Pari!
The colours are so vibrant! What an adventure you are on…
It was such a pretty lane. I am a big fan old the real people’s old abodes…..Cheers to you Rebecca!
I love these photo’s!! I would be in heaven going from room to room looking at all of the artifacts!! *Cynthia
I was also!!! Loved it all, much more than the the castle! 🙂
More great shots from your adventure. Love the colos of that cottage…not thought about mixing shades, just the brightest blue and the brightest green. See that so much in tropical countries, and now in Prague. Happy travels..looking forward to next stop.
Later…
Yes the vibrant colors work beautifully in the tropics and in Prague. Cheers and thanks to you~
Fascinating. I spent several minutes just taking in the details. Lovely:)
How wonderful! Thank you & welcome~
What a colorful, cheerful looking lane! These cottages look like such happy and cozy living and working quarters. Safe travels to you!
Thank you! This is just how I felt. Cheers to you~
What a wonderful group of photos of the cottages. I love the room with the ladder.
We couldn’t go up it but I loved it too!
These cottages are quaint and beautiful!
Aren’t they! I thought so too! Thank you~
Did you see any washing facilities? Bathroom facilities?
This would be something I would ask and be curious about and the answer is YES & no! They used basins for washing and had out houses indoors, but this I only saw in the castle…..
The concept of such neat little cottages for skilled servants seemed quite innovative so that made me wonder if they were innovative with sanitation/bathing needs as well. I am glad we both like to think about these practicalities!
Exactly! Plus people are reluctanty coy about discussing includings such important and basic information.
I like the honeycomb windows. Everything is always so neatly arranged and clean in museums – I bet in real life the tools would have been jumbled up and there might have been dust on a few surfaces!
And maybe some dirty dishes lying around……LOL!
I have wanted to go to Prague for some time. However, you make me want to go sooner than later. What fun to wander through those buildings. I do agree that these looks more interesting than another castle regardless of how grand it is. 🙂
Prague was simply a series of marvelous daily discoveries. Not to be missed. I hope you go soon. Be well Lea and thank you!

I loved the Golden Lane, but I took only a few photos. It was too crowded the day when we were there. You took beautiful photos of this special place. Thank you, Cindy!
We are in the midst of discussing returning to Eastern Europe in 2015 and are going to Estonia this year. Prague made me a devotee!!! Such a city with soul!
Estonia! It looks like a beautiful place to visit, I just saw a few photos on Google. You’re truly a world traveler. Thank you so much for taking us to the places you have visited through your lens.
Thank you Amy for exactly the same things!!!! 😉
