About cindy knoke

I retired early after 27 years as a psychotherapist/mental health director (Cindy Barton LCSW) and moved to the outer limits of no-wheres-ville to a home I call "the holler." My closest neighbors are coyotes (packs and packs of them and they are HUNGRY), rattlers (lots and lots of them and they are MEAN), and free range cows/bulls (the bulls aren't too friendly either!) Forget cell phones. They don't work out here. Forget GPS, it misdirects. It's best not to wander too much out here, the people (and their dogs) are kinda twitchy. To reach the holler your turn right at the reeking chicken farm, down a bunch of pot-holed semi-streets/dirt roads, past the abandoned refrigerators and occupied old RV’s and then things get kinda dicey. My friends usual reaction to the trip to the holler is, “you’ve got to be kidding!” Or, “Next time let’s meet half way.” This is our little bit of heavenly Appalachia right here in rural California. I blog about traveling which I do about three months a year, cooking which I love, photography, usually of my food and trips, books, holler happenings, and anything else that strikes my fancy. Stop by the blog and take a peek. It’s safe. I promise. Cheers, Cindy

  1. My son and family live in Carlsbad. Wonder if they have seen those fields. What riotous color. And even in photographs they brighten up the last gray days of winter here. Thank you!

    • Oh, I am sure your son must know of the fields…..urge him to visit with his children, there is ice cream and a play area, all quite nice for a young family…..So glad they brightened your day!

  2. How beautiful! Is it possible spring is in fact on it’s way despite the snow and galeforce winds battering us here lol…these are lovely with such an abundance of colour and sheer joy in living :)

  3. Loved the pics, Cindy. I’d like to place an order for a barrel of that sunshine…, you know…, just enough to get me through to springtime here. Those flowers are gorgeous.

  4. Wow, these pictures are breathtaking! It is interesting the different effect between the close ups and the fields, they almost look like different flowers. I love them both, but the closeups bring out color variations and give you a real feel for the differences between each flower. I live in Canada so the only flowers I’ve seen in bloom so far are crocuses and snow drops. It looks a lot warmer where you are, and you have found some real beauties. Plus you sure know how to take a picture!

    • How kind of you thank you! Your comments are very much appreicated. I love your blog and think it is VERY important, but sometimes I have trouble accessing it….my computer freezes up, hopefully this is just my quirky computer……I will try again & cheers to you!

  5. When I saw your post I couldn’t wait to open it up, knowing there would be wonderful pictures, but these are gorgeous!! I never knew or heard of this place when I liked in No. California – I’ll reminder for later travels.

    • Northern & Southern California are like different states. I think generally that No. California has more natural beauty, but there are many beautiful areas down here as well and this is surely one. Cheers & thanks!

    • Not a one……at least that I’ve seen. Rattlers prefer brush, so you are very safe!!! Plus the ocean is next door. Beautiful spot & cheers to you. No rattlers spotted at the holler yet either…fingers crossed! :)

    • Wendy-
Yes they are blooming now. These are the earliest blooms. They will continue and get better for another few weeks….but are gone by late spring. Congrats on your new business! Great to hear from you!
