“I would not exchange my home on the range,
For all of the cities so bright.”

Dr. Brewster Higley wrote “Home on the Range,” in Kansas in 1873. He originally wrote it as a poem that was later turned into the song we all know. I think Dr. Higley would be right at home at The Holler and find that many things haven’t changed too much out here. We aim to keep it that way!

About cindy knoke

I retired early after 27 years as a psychotherapist/mental health director (Cindy Barton LCSW) and moved to the outer limits of no-wheres-ville to a home I call "the holler." My closest neighbors are coyotes (packs and packs of them and they are HUNGRY), rattlers (lots and lots of them and they are MEAN), and free range cows/bulls (the bulls aren't too friendly either!) Forget cell phones. They don't work out here. Forget GPS, it misdirects. It's best not to wander too much out here, the people (and their dogs) are kinda twitchy. To reach the holler your turn right at the reeking chicken farm, down a bunch of pot-holed semi-streets/dirt roads, past the abandoned refrigerators and occupied old RV’s and then things get kinda dicey. My friends usual reaction to the trip to the holler is, “you’ve got to be kidding!” Or, “Next time let’s meet half way.” This is our little bit of heavenly Appalachia right here in rural California. I blog about traveling which I do about three months a year, cooking which I love, photography, usually of my food and trips, books, holler happenings, and anything else that strikes my fancy. Stop by the blog and take a peek. It’s safe. I promise. Cheers, Cindy

      • Yes but Vancouver is a vibrant city, and steps away is all of glorious Canada. I wanted to move to the Sunshine coast for retirement, but my husband was hesistant. Canada’s wild beauty knocks my socks off. We went up the Knight Inlet and hung out with the grizzlies and the orcas in Telegraph Cove. I am a full bore Canada-phile! Our next trip after Europe is back to Banff, Jasper and Lake Louise. Stunning!!! We recently rented a cabin in the north woods in Quebec…there were wolves and wolverines….Heaven!!

  1. Your wild flowers look like the ones I have to work really hard to cultivate in my garden :) In the Holler you can sing Home on the Range as loud and as long as you like; what fun.

    • You can do pretty much anything as loud as you want. Don’t tell anyone, but I sometimes howl along with the coyote packs. They are used to it now. They used to silence when I did, now they sort of incorporate it……too funny! But shhh! It’s embarrassing……

  2. Love the beautiful rolling hills and meadows…, and the stream…, and the wildflowers. Beautiful, Cindy. You must get bored with all this beauty every day !!! NOT !!!

    • It changes so much seasonally that one can’t get bored and we haven’t even begun to explore all of it. So you are right cuz, NOT!
Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Please give your wife my condolences~

    • It’s funny. because when I looked at the stanzas of the original poem, I thought, “this guy gets it….back in 1873!” It makes me happy to think he might not be too appalled if he came out here because there is a sense of time slowing down here and a lack of “progress” and development. Thank God! Cheers & thanks for getting this also! No surprise there~

  3. Looks like an Eyvind Earle painting, Cindy. Especially, the fourth photo. Love the serenity of the creek. Thank you for sharing. {{{Hugs}}} Kozo

  4. Yes the landscapes are similar…I hadn’t thought of this. There is this odd, arty shot of the creek, that looks even more Earle-like. I didn’t include it because it was sort of out of place. I’ll post it soon though as it interested me. One never knows what one’s camera is going to do……Hugs back to you & thanks too~

  5. Reminds me of where I have some relatives in The country…though much of that area is also being built up. They’ve got a bunch of family that still produces fresh maple syrup. Enough land and neighbors lands to hunt. They use what they catch. I’ve only got a little piece of suburbia now. I’ve lived in the big city. But I’ve grown used to my little bit of space here.

I did send you an e-mail, and posted your ‘gift’. I hope you and the lovely couple enjoy the words :)
Since pieces are on the small side I’ll slip them here too…For the future Mrs. and Mr.:

  6. beautiful photos, I heard vancover was a very nice place to live for being so far north, relativly speaking compared to say calif or ohio or new york, but I heard it was very expensive, personally I don’t like cities, but you seem so close to wilderness it is probably worth it.

    • Our rancho is in a rural part of southern California, believe it or not!! I was talking to another commenter who lived in Vancouver. I prefer wilderness too! Thank you for dropping by & cheers~

    • It’s fun in the morning becuase the birds are so active…the roadrunners often watch us through the window and it is not unusual to wake up with one watching you intensely through the glass…..Hilarious!! Snoopy little buggers!
