About cindy knoke

I retired early after 27 years as a psychotherapist/mental health director (Cindy Barton LCSW) and moved to the outer limits of no-wheres-ville to a home I call "the holler." My closest neighbors are coyotes (packs and packs of them and they are HUNGRY), rattlers (lots and lots of them and they are MEAN), and free range cows/bulls (the bulls aren't too friendly either!) Forget cell phones. They don't work out here. Forget GPS, it misdirects. It's best not to wander too much out here, the people (and their dogs) are kinda twitchy. To reach the holler your turn right at the reeking chicken farm, down a bunch of pot-holed semi-streets/dirt roads, past the abandoned refrigerators and occupied old RV’s and then things get kinda dicey. My friends usual reaction to the trip to the holler is, “you’ve got to be kidding!” Or, “Next time let’s meet half way.” This is our little bit of heavenly Appalachia right here in rural California. I blog about traveling which I do about three months a year, cooking which I love, photography, usually of my food and trips, books, holler happenings, and anything else that strikes my fancy. Stop by the blog and take a peek. It’s safe. I promise. Cheers, Cindy

  1. Excellent shots, beautiful color — your pics make the bees look like they’re holding still! Very pretty spring colors on the flowers; makes me look forward to spring all the more!

    • I love bees. Even though they stung me last year which I didn’t love. I love flowers too and I love spring……Maybe I am too upbeat????? LOL!
      Cheers to you my friend~

  2. Nice bee pics – bees are one of my favorite creatures…..and I envy you being out at the ‘holler, even though I’m probably not quite ready to venture there and set up shop…

    • Bees are quite fun. The most thrilling thing out here with the bees are when the swarms move which they do frequently because we are surrounded with citrus orchards. They have flown directly at me in this high volume swarm, and parted like the Red Sea around me. Amazing….Now when I hear the swarms, I run to see where they are going…….

    • Can you even imagine how fun that would be? You would get to go to all these exotic locales and take pics. This is what I do anyway, but they would pay me to do it. Thank you Rebecca. Just read your Geisel post. I adore the man. Always have~

    • Seriously…….whoa! That is intense.
We have drought here though and fires.
It’s like Frost said, “Some say the world will end in Fire. Some say it’ll end in ice….”
Unlike Frost, I would take ice over fire anyday…..
Never thought till this second that his name was Frost and he hated ice……

    • It’s a bit more challenging now, as most of our bees are Africanized and do at times buzz at you. Had a swarm come at me, they parted like The Red Sea around and I must confess it was thrilling….Love the bees! Thank you & cheers to you~

    • It’s kinda a no-brainer, flowers and honeybees, what’s not to like? Our natural world is so beautiful and I love capturing and sharing this. Thank you Wally. You do the same with your Adirondack series….But the Adirondacks have been harmed and I know we both have a strong conservation goal, behind our posts. Cheers to you my friend~

  3. they are all lovely, though i always pull back a little bit when i see a bee! we have the african bees here, so there’s always a danger of spooking one, which then alerts the entire colony!
thanks for giving me a much-safer view, and oh how lovely! z

    • Most of ours are Africanized as well. I have had swarms fly around me. Got stung once in the fall. Bad, but for some reason I am mostly comfortable around them, cannot say the same about rattlesnakes, though!!. The bees are satiated here with gazillions of blossoms in the orchards and at the holler which may be why~

  4. Thanks for sharing the beauty of your home. It is very uplifting. I retired from a mental health agency after supervising a sheltered workshop for DD adults. I, too, moved to a remote part of the world. It is peaceful here. Do you suppose our former careers have anything to do with where we live now? LOL

    • Absolutely!! It wasn’t my clients or mental health colleagues I wanted to get away from though. I adored them. People with selfish agendas working around you can be tiring though, and they are none such out here. I embrace the solitude as I bet you do too…..Lot’s of blogging mental health folks have connected with me and I am thrilled. People both retired (lots of them) and still working. So welcome, you are in familiar territory! Can’t wait to hear more about where you live…..Cheers!

    • Bees really are quite cute and one can’t say this about most other insects…They have the fuzzy hairs and little bent antennaes…..cute little buzzers!! Cheers & thanks!
